How many different nursing positions have you had?

After talking with some nursing friends, our numbers have all varied dramatically.

Please tell me:

1. How long have you been a nurse?

2. How many different UNITS have you worked for? (even if one is ortho and your next one was a ortho trauma - same kind of nursing, but different unit)

3. How many areas have you worked in? (This is wear ortho trauma would count different than just ortho)

I've been a nurse for four years, on my second job now as of two months ago. I'm a unit manager in continuing care, and my previous position was a charge nurse on nights.

Currently, I work Mon-Friday. I actually prefer working shifts.

Nurse for 9 years.

Worked my first unit (L&D) for 5 years.

Moved, worked a different unit (also L&D) for about 1 1/2 years.

Switched gears, got a job in perinatal research (in L&D and NICU but not as a bedside nurse), did that for 2 years.

Switched gears, got a job in leadership, working in outpatient OB/Gyn, have been there almost a year.

I've been a nurse for 8 years (LPN 5, RN 3). I've had 6 jobs and hold 2 currently. I've worked hospital-based SNF, LTC, home health, and private duty.

Four years qualified, three different surgical posts, followed by current job working in PACU where I hope to stay.

Celebrating six years as a nurse next month...I worked for four years on a subacute rehab floor of a SNF and have worked for the last two years at a Level II trauma center on the transplant med/surg floor. Completed my BSN in 2008 and my MSN in Nursing Education in 2013. I also have served as a preceptor for senior nursing students in their capstone clinical experience for two different local colleges.

1994-1996 - adult ICU RN

1996-2006 - level one ER RN

2006-present - nephrology APN

Thirty years total, with five as an LPN. Worked a variety from rehab, neuro, med/surg. Obtained my RN and worked as a hospital float, so all units except icu. Left that hospital and settled into med/surg for 16 years and floated to endo,ED, mother/baby, PCU when needed. Left due to staffing and burn out.

Currently for last 5 years I'm in a smaller hospital and work as charge nurse in acute care but also do tons on committee work and union stuff. It keeps me entertained.

I've worked med-surg, ortho, float, nursery and for the last 27 years in the NICU. Love the babies. Will stay till retirement.
