Hospital staff/no weekends/holidays

Has anyone ever been privileged to be hired as part of hospital as a staff nurse and be allowed not to have to work weekends or holidays due to the schedule of your child's child care facility? I know these working hours are virtually unheard of at a hospital for a staff nurse, but I know it has happened somewhere. So, who has experienced this or know someone who has? I know these hours are usually found in outpatient, but I'm very curious about hospitals. Thanks!

I'm a day shift charge nurse in a skilled facility/nursing home. I work Monday-Friday as does the charge nurse for the other wing. We are the only 2 staff nurses that are monday-Friday but we do have to work holidays like everyone else. All RN's at my facility take call rotation us included. As the charge nurses we do have a lot more responsibility than any of the other staff nurses. I know you were asking about hospitals but there are interesting scheduling options if you look around. Get a masters and teach...other than that not much maybe day surgery?

Ducking my head....I have a m-f job working inpatient. I work with other WOCN's and we have the option to take particular holidays off if we'd like but we do not all take off at the same time, we rotate and/or take call. Maybe somewhere down the line we may have to start doing weekends and I'm ok with that. I honestly wish I could go back to working 12's (but in my same role!).

I don't know how a hospital can function if not the majority of its staff rotates weekends/holidays. That's especially important in specialties. And it can't be good for employee morale if one employee is permitted to but not another given the same set of circumstances. Yikes.

Ill point out that there are certain areas in nursing where you work M-F no holidays.

Getting it on a normal floor doing bedside isnt going to happen.

But I recently interviewed for an OR Nursing position thats M-F only no holidays. (plus sometimes being on call which I love, which CAN be on holidays)

There are things like Utilization Review nursing as well that are M-f no holidays no call, but I cant say I know much about that.

I guess you could always try working somewhere that only has its nurses do 8 hour shifts, and hope they let you just work M-F

You're more likely to win the lottery than to find hospital/acute care setting that doesn't require weekends or holidays. And at any rate, that is where the $$$ are at....weekends, nights (especially) and holidays (cha-ching).

There are a few positions that don't require holidays or weekends. However, those are usually in management, and the people who work those kind of hours are VERY high up in seniority and have worked their fair share of crappy schedules.

The OR thing is pretty great $$$ wise

Especially if you get evenings (3-11) where you still pretty much get the night differential plus on call pay

I'm in the OR, we work maybe one weekend on call every month and a rare holiday.. It's pretty infrequent. An actual weekend day may be once every few months. Not bad at all..

I don't have to work weekends, nights or holidays but I'm PRN too. But a full time staff nurse doing this? Boy oh boy there's about to be a war on that floor.

Thanks guys. The answers were where my gut led me. However, I know a friend who just landed a staff position at a hospital and has been secured a no weekends/holidays position simply because she knows the manager VERY well. A mere example of pure favoritism. Oh well, some individuals are just that lucky.

This nurse's colleagues will either hate her or she's working on a floor where everyone hates the NM so much that no one wants to work the weekday day shifts when she's around. Maybe she works on my old floor.

I have worked on units that have a fairly sizable 'weekend only' staff, so that regular full-time staff does not have to work very many weekend days at all. However, if weekend staff moves on, takes a weekend off (they are allowed one or two a year), then regular staff is going to be scheduled those weekends. I am lucky enough to work very few weekend days currently, but that could change based on how many weekend staff we have at any given time.

Holidays are a different story. It works out to, basically, every other official holiday for my hospital. While you are always able to negotiate with other staff to have a particular holiday off, it is pretty much non-negotiable. My guess is this is true on most hospital units.

Every hospital I've worked at has a weekend requirement for every nurse, so there goes that. As for nights, usually you get hired into nights and have to wait for an opening for days.
