Has Nurse's week been changed to "hospital week"?

During my first 10 years or so of nursing, the first or second week of May was always "Nurses Week"- the hospital would honor us with a "Nurses Week" banner and give us pens or a candy bar or something. Over the past 2 years or so, seems like Nurses Week has been replaced with "Hospital Week"........ We now get nothing but the banner. Whatever.....

I'm just wondering if other places still celebrate "Nurses Week"? Why do you think we stopped celebrating "Nurses WeeK'? Was it offensive to "non-nurses? Did the "non-nurses" demand a recall?

Whatya think?????

Today they handed out ice cream for "Nurses' DAY", a part of "National Health Care Week". I felt a little cheated.

Here in Juneau, we are celebrating Hospital Week next week. This week is all about the nurses.

I'm not really sure what they're doing for us, other than the admin is giving away 2 $500 airfares in a raffle type draw, open only to the nurses. Our manager will have something for us as well, but we don't know what that is yet.

Next week, there is an ice cream social, a beach barbeque, a free night at the swimming pool, free breakfast in the cafeteria, an ad in the local paper, and the hospital admin bought every employee the Land's End Marinac Vest embroidered with the hospital logo. Last year we got Red Cross first aid kits and a Land's End canvas tote bag.

We, too, celebrate nurses week this week and then hospital week next week.

This week in addition to the typical free CE and themed parties and free massages, there's a big formal "Gala" at the convention center Friday night, RSVP only.

Hospital week we typically get all sorts of free swag like $250 gas/grocery cards and such (one of the perks to being in the top 10 best places to work according to fortune).

The celebration of Nurses Week is traditionally to be celebrated around Florence Nightingale's birthday, May 12. I think that Nurses week is a good idea, as it gives time to celebrate with all shifts and days (weekday, weekends, and two separate weeks in a schedule). I think it usually runs from Wednesday-Wednesday so that everyone can celebrate somehow at work, although that can vary from place to place as well.

I think that there are some non-nurse staff who may get irritated with nurses week and feel left out, but it seems like there are plenty of other "specialty" weeks that can accomodate them as well. If you aren't a nurse, nurse's week really isn't for you to celebrate. It is one of the very small perks of being a nurse. I don't expect recognition for myself during any other week that celebrates any other staff position, and cannot understand why anyone who is not a nurse would expect recognition during nurses week.

Just my two cents. Happy Nurses Week to all!

I want to come work with you guys. We get breakfast...in the cafeteria...the same food we pay for every other day...and if you're not working that day, you get nothing.

Nurses week is always the 6th-12th, so it's not a typical M-F business week.

Our facility promotes & celebrates Hospital Week.

Our Nursing Retention Committee has taken the job of celebrating Nurses Week. They've gotten donations from local businesses for give-aways, massages, etc. Since there's overlap of the 2 weeks this year, a lot of of our Nurse Week activities are in conjunction with Hospital Week. On the 12th we are having a big luncheon provided by the hospital, so that should be nice.

:twocents: Not to sound ungrateful or bitter or (insert emotion)...but I always figured that if Hallmark can make a card for it, then my facility could recognize it. :yeah:

I work tonight, so I will see what we get...;)

Where I work we still celebrate Nurses' Week (more so Nurses' Day, I suppose), and we have a separate week later in the summer that is 'Hospital Week.' We don't really get anything, though. Ditto on the meal.

I don't care one way or another.

I have a collection of some things with the company logo on it.

My husband carries a lunch bag to work with the "nurses week 2003" on it.

I guess I don't feel I need a special day or week for my profession.

Nursing week seems to be thrown in with other professions at my place of work. I am not a celebratory sort of person, anyhow, so, I can take it or leave it, really. But, if they are going to do this, there should be at least a day during that time that also honors the CNAs, techs, and other titles that fall under the umbrella of the nursing department, but are not typically acknowledged.
