I remember several years ago in my community ,a TV news report showing FBI agents (had jackets on with the letters FBI on the back) wheeling out of a notoriously bad nursing home dollies with boxes of documents in them ( per reporter). The nursing home was shut down and Administrator and owner went to prison for Medicaid fraud.

I remember that - that was in Milwaukee right?

Is the FBI the same as the Federal people that come in for nursing home inspections? A nursing home I worked at a couple years ago had both the state inspectors and the federal inspectors, but this was only because the state inspectors were being reveiwed. We had a pretty thorough inspection that year! And only one site - those darn kitchen workers!;)

feds make inspection just as state inspectors do

osha goes in to make sure that proper procedure is followed

this is your tax dollars at work, one that i am glad to know is out there

the fbbi would handle fraud and the other inspectors would follow up on patient care

Specializes in US Army.

Usually the term "feds" is related to the law enforcement side of the federal government... FBI, DEA, ICE, ATF.

If any of those guys see a need to physically come to a nursing home you can bet there is something very illegal going on. They don't show up without good reason, they are too busy as it is.

Specializes in Emergency & Trauma/Adult ICU.

Nursing homes are licensed by individual states. However, there are areas where "the feds" would have jurisdiction:

compliance with DEA regs

suspected employment of illegal aliens unable to legally work in the US

Medicare fraud

employment problems that have attracted the attention of the EEOC

suspected civil rights violations (including HIPAA)

Specializes in geriatric & childrens psych, rehab, woun.

the feds in a nursing home is not a good thing, it means some major complaints, a fed inspection make the state inspection look like a cake walk. and they can shut down a facility or unit in a heart beat.

Specializes in LTC, Hospice, Case Management.

Wow... lots of speculation. There are and always have been federal (medical)compliance inspectors. They go in a certain percentage of all long term care facilities and conduct a federal survey, just like state surveyors do. Our most recent state survey had a federal inspector tagging along with the state surveyors. The state watched us to make sure we were in compliance, the federal guy watched the state surveyors to make sure they were in compliance. No big deal, and actually the federal guy was the friendliest of the bunch.

This isn't some big bad thing! Everyone's just got a job to do,
