Does anyone love their job?

Nurses General Nursing

I have heard so many stories about how hard nursing is and all there is to complain about, but does anyone enjoy their work? Please let's hear from someone who is glad they got into nursing and wouldn't change their choice for anything.

I guess I agree with what every one else has said about loving their job. It ends up that we're a special group of people choosen to work this field of medicine. You have to hang on that truth to be able to endure this profession. And I know there are millions of patients who grateful that we all have stuck it out and do our best despite the trials that are against us!!! So give yourself a pat on the back, tell yourself your doing a good job because very rarely will you hear that from anyone else. Remember our traits are showing compasion, kindness, caring, hard-working, observants of fine details, servers to man-kind (and don't expect any thankyou's because we don't usually hear them). Mediators. An ability to show sympathy & empathy. To be able to cry with our patients and with their families Lover's of learning and teaching our fellow man kind. Perfectionists personalities (who are too hard on themselves). Thick skinned (a trait which is developed over a period of time in order to endure this profession}. Also, we're very good listeners & very wise from the experiences which we had to endure. So, if you've had a bad day, (imagine that could anyone could possibly have a bad day from nursing, haha) pat yourself on the back. And if I've missed anything add to the list.

has anyone heard about the school BOCES that offers lpn?

I'm not a nurse yet, but I havent really met anyone who "loves" their job. What's that about ??!!

I rec'd a note from one of my patients that actually went through the unit manager. She mentioned 3 of her nurses and just ranted over all of us for making her recovery happen. I work on the rehab unit. She called me her "sympathetic helper". Made me feel good. That's when it's worth it....when someone says you have made a difference. We are so short staffed at our hospital. We have 69 nursing jobs open on our job listings! It's awful. For a while we had 12 openings for RN's in CCU. We had a bunch to walk out and now they are using a lot of agency nurses and that's somehting we usually don't use. We also have lots of flex pool nurses. Anyway it is a very honorable but difficult profession. I have so many health problems I'm not sure I can work much longer. Especially in rehab. It's really tough. My unit manager didn't bother to tell any of us about all the lifting. In fact she said that we had plenty of help to lift but we don't of course. We also have to many chiefs and not enough indians. Well you guys have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! God Bless!

Some days i absolutely love it...

Other days i absolutely hate it...

Most days are in between.

But...it's my opinion that once you 'get it in you'...you cant do anything else. Many nurses burn the candle at both ends, age more quickly than the general population, and require an occaisional adrenalin surge to keep them awake. And ***** about it alot.

But they keep on coming back...day after day...

I think that (in a wierd way) even if they dont admit it, they love it.

I have always loved my job (I am a CNA), it is great to spend my days with such wonderful people. Geriatric patients especially are very authentic. They are what they are....and you know where you stand.

I haven't always liked the attitudes of some in healthcare. I've seen alot of prejudice.

But when I think of doing anything else....it just doesn't spark.

It's probably true that there are many in healthcare who have lost the joy of it, who would rather be doing something else and stay in nursing due to necessity, or inertia. But I think it is also true of many "adventures" that you don't fully appreciate them while they are happening until you've survived them. Nursing is often very hard work, and it can be more satisfying to look back on the hard work you've done than forward to the hard work you have ahead of you. Sitting here at the computer, with no one calling out for the third time in twenty minutes to see if it's time for their pain meds, nursing is great.

I'm still new at this. I get a feeling of accomplishment every time I place a Foley or successfully start an IV. It won't always be like that. Even now, I recognize that such tasks eat up time that could be spent--ugh--charting.

I do believe it's possible to hold onto the "fun" of nursing. Some parts will surely (hopefully) become routine. But there will always be challenges to overcome. Then, too, I think the difference between a PITA and a favorite patient isn't how much of your time they need, but how appreciated you feel for giving it. So I've been working on appreciating myself, even when a patient may not.

Clearly, some nurses love their jobs, even after decades. It may be they're just naturally suited for it. But just in case, I'm trying to make a conscious effort to be one of them.

Last weekend, I had a patient starting to go bad. I was way over my head. My sympathetic nervous system was right on the brink of full flight-or-fight. It was literally a sickening feeling. But I had strong nurses and doctors around to step in. I did what I could, but mostly I was helping them and watching, and learning. I can't say there is anything fun about seeing one of your patients hooked up to the crash cart, but I do find some satisfaction in all of the things that went right, including some of which I did. Well, and of course it helps a lot that the patient was doing okay in ICU, last I heard.

Which may be a long way of saying, it's a lot easier to love this job when you aren't entirely sane.

Hey, there has got to be someone who loves their job. How about a cookie taste tester, or maybe a test chef? A stunt man or woman--they'd have to love it to even consider doing it.

People who make movies or draw cartoons or make animations--their jobs are fun, so what's not to love?

I personally know a woman who is a recipe tester. She just makes up and tests new recipes. That's GOT to be fun.

Yes, their are some people who love their jobs. :coollook: :coollook: :coollook:

Yes I do love nursing and do not regret going into the medical field once.Right now I am working on my BSN and I am 40 and it's hard. I get my rewards from the people that I see that I really make a difference, and they are so appreciative it makes up for the one's that are not...and yes I c/o wonder what the hell i thiught i was doing going back to school, but it is a dream for me I quit school in the 9th grade to raise my...so I have worked very hsrd at not letting the ungrateful people screwit up

I truly love my profession, I love Labor & Delivery. It is such a blessing to be a part of God's wonderful miracle of life. Do I love my job? Sometimes. It seems that our facilities sometimes take a lot of the joy out of our jobs, making our jobs less special. I love my career though. I don't know what I would have done if I had chosen not to be a nurse.

depends on how I feel; usually if I get to where it's draining me, it's because I just overscheduled and am trying to jam 6 days/at 12h/day into one week.

Really, I do love my job, been an RN for 10 yrs mostly med/surg, just transferred to IMCU/ICU...

I do love my nursing job, always wanted to be a nurse and still think its amazing. Its some kind of feeling i get when im taking care of people in a nursing manner that makes me feel so wonderful. i cant explain it, i just know that the procedures i do on my job i absolutely love, even the simple little ones like placing a manual blood pressure cuff on a childs wrist and holding it there--you can see it on their face how they love having their hand held while they are so sick...One thing i dont like is the lead test i have to give to the kiddos though...i hate having to squeeze their finger while they scream...but i dont have to do those too often. Just remember, work is a four-letter word...just like other four-letter words. They wouldnt be paying you for it if there wasnt any issues... or ass--ets involved if you know what I mean.

Overall, Pluses in nursing definitely outweigh the negatives... and I do lovelovelove it. :}
