I have decided to go back to school.....only this time i'm going to go to slow guy school......ya know, to learn to be the guy standing on the side of the road holding a slow sign..... I could wear jeans with holes in the knee.....a cute lil sunbonnet and black combat boots.....and the only thing i'd have to do all day is not get hit by a car......i hear the pay is better too!! I figure if i give a prize to say....every hundredth car that drives by, then everyone would want to drive through my construction zone, wahlah......job security!! If I show up everyday on time, maybe show a lil enthusiasm and ambition....i could get issued a walkie talkie.......and then have a slow guy assistant..... and as a bonus, I could wear a neon orange vest with a glow in the dark "X" on the back.......woohoo!!......there the style now, if you don't believe me......look up and down the highways sometime....every one is wearing them........
rotten day, sorry....had to vent..... feeling much better now, thanks!!

That is "flagperson," by the way. There is no school, you apply with whomever is doing the highway construction (usually through the county or state highway department) or the private contractor doing building construction who needs a truck traffic flagperson. It pays very well, though sometimes a job exists only for the duration of a current project. And, of course, remember to use sunblock frequently.

My sis worked one summer as the slow person. She got a great tan and later graduated to roller person, you know rolling the concrete on the new highway.

Actually, there IS a school, at least if you want to work for union scale. You have to attend a 4-hr class and take a written test (an easy one--I still remember goggling at the guy next to me who fidgeted and mumbled and finally asked the instructor, "Hey, is #7 a trick question?" )
I flagged during summers in college. Would you believe the pay--after 4 hours of school-- was exactly the same as my starting pay as a nurse--after 4 YEARS of school?
Some job similarities--loooooong stretches without pee breaks. Verbal abuse from people who feel frustrated and helpless. Chauvinistic colleagues. However, nurses don't have nearly so many people trying to run them over at 60 miles an hour, I'll give you that.....

I have been a nurse fo 25 years and that ha ALWAYS been MY fantasy dream job! Then a gal friend did it for a summer in Alaska, made fair money, and LOVED it. Let's get an old van and ALL go for a summer. Imagine the humor on our crew!

Yes you most certainly can, as long as its not on the golf course
doo wah ditty
stargazer: You are right, but I wasn't counting a 4 hour class as a "school." Does kind of show you how much nursing is valued, once again. Wonder how long the "school" is for trash collection, which also usually pays better than nursing AND their union is often the Teamsters instead of some wimpy "company union."

I have pondered the job of slow guy for years. I don't care how much the prevailing wage is, I would go insane standing around all day. I would throw myself under the roller by noon on the first day. No offense to any slow guys out there, but I have to do something that keeps me busy.
