Bullying/Harrassment?

Nurses General Nursing

Just wandering if anyone out there has been or is currently being bullied on purpose at work? Or if you are currently in a situation that involves a Manager doing this to you, or if your manager lied to you during the hiring process and is now purposely not paying you the hours that you deserve even though the policy handbook state otherwise? And Payroll even says the manager is wrong but nothing is being done to correct it?

I am also interested in knowing if you complained to HR and they did nothing about it, and or they refused to hold the individual/s accountable for the bullying and harassment?

Did they ignore your grievances all together?

Thanks!

Do you have a job offer with a rate of pay in writing?

The issue is that in the handbook it says your allowed 80 hours, and even payroll says this. However HR lady and the manager (in question) is saying that no its only 72 hours. But the weird thing is that the PTO that is being taken out is not showing up even though its being deducted. The other odd thing about this particular dept. is that there saying since was hired in as a .9, only 72 hours is allowed. But the other two nurses responsible for the bullying are at 80. No where in the handbook does it say that I'm working as a .9 and only allowed 72 hours. Wasn't given this information when hired. Complained about it and now the manager and the other two nurses are going full bore in harassment. I have documented everything, still no help

Being "allowed" to work 80 hours and being entitled/guaranteed to work 80 hours are two very different things. Many nursing jobs are 72 hours because they consist of 12 hour shifts. An additional 12 hour shift would obligate the employer to pay overtime which is something employers typically want to avoid.

I can't make sense of what you're saying about the PTO, but from your other complaints I'm thinking there's most likely a misunderstanding there, too.

It sounds like you weren't clear on the terms of the position you were offered and accepted. A 0.9 employee has a 36 hour work week (72 hours biweekly). The handbook wouldn't be the reference to tell you that you're a 0.9 employee, that would've been the initial job offer/acceptance. Now, how do you know that the nurses that are getting 80 hours weren't hired for 1.0 positions? You don't even know what position you were hired for so how could you possibly know theirs?

The 80 hours is allowed everywhere. What I am getting at is that nothing was ever said about the .9 or only being allowed to work only 72 rather than 80. The handbook clearly states 80 hours. Why would someone leave one part of the hospital for less pay and less hours, they wouldn't. That would be stupid. That's my point is that what I'm being told is not in writing anywhere. It's like there making up things as we go. However the handbook is very clear on the hours and PTO. But the HR dept does not or is not taking the matter seriously. The manager has removed my PTO without indicating it anywhere. I know this because I have looked at pay stubs online and the section for PTO. Things are not adding up! And HR is useless.

People switch to less hours for many reasons. Returning to school, child care needs, getting older and want fewer hours, more time off for family, etc.

In some areas, depending on the facility, there are nurses who have varied hours; it's not surprising if one unit works 80 and one unit works 72.

At my employer, I have been a 1.0 and worked two 12s and 2 8s, but desired 0.9, however I had to apply for such a position; I sometimes pick up to 80 hours; however sometimes the description is up to my manager if I can work the hours; I usually never turned down.

If you have a hiring letter based on your hours, and that's what you are hired for, your manager may have descetion over what hours you can be extended to, even if you policy states that full time can extend to 80 hrs a pay.

Are you also saying that management has removed your PTO from your pay stub?

That sounds like a legal issue-which we can't give legal advice for but...if you are not getting headway with HR, it would best to look into

your states laws regarding PTO accrual and may need to go further with your complaint.

Thanks Ladyfree28 that makes sense and what you stated is my complaint. Appreciate the responses from everyone!

It sounds like two different topics. Anyhow try to get it fixed. Do you have the agreement in writing?

I'm curious about the harassment and bullying.

What have the manager and your co-workers been doing to bully you? I'm also wondering why. Your disappointment from finding out that you've been scheduled less than 40 hours per week is understandable. The number of hours you were expected to work each week should have been conveyed to you during the interview process, and it sounds like this was not done.

For what reason has your PTO been removed? Were they giving you PTO based on an 80-hour pay period instead of a 72-hour pay period, discovered their mistake, and removed some of it?

I am sorry to say been there, not right now because i learned to defend myself. As a new ,well not very new but at a new place which I loved, there was a manager that got her jollies off bullying different people each week,to the point many cried or quit. She bullied Doctors especially residents, ANMs,staff.I never saw a turnover like that anywhere,no wonder they had openings, those on night shift usually got on days within 6 months.

She would even pull on your clothes, slam desks in an effort to intimidate.Everyone knew administration would not do anything, or if she found out you had a hit me sign on your back.we all knew she could set you up to get you in trouble about your care.

The residents would talk back but she only got louder and if you were friendly with that person she would set her radar on you.

Lazy lazy, even the patients complained "doesn't she have anything better to do other yell up and the corridors"?

I had respect for her position and knowledge but hoped for the earth to swallow her up.

Her little snitch always had it good.

When she found out one nurse was politically connected, she backed off from that one.

I knew if I ever had the chance to find something else I would never ever let some two bit manager raise their voice at me,and I held it for the rest of my years.

She was asked once by The DON,why was so and so leaving? She would make up lies about it.

The exit interviews were useless because they were done will you still worked there and that scared everyone.

Eventually I also left ,causing myself much hardship financially but found my fav job ,with wonderful people, not perfect but much better.

It is up to u to decide what to do , HR is usually useless unless there is more than one person ,more strength in a group, these days you have a chance of being treated better by HR,more awareness these days of bullying, good luck to you, dont despair, dont cry in front of anyone.
