i always wondered do nurses get into cliques like high school on nursing floors whereas they single outsiders out and give them the harder assignments. does that go on at your hospital?

Yup! However, as a second career nurse I can promise you, it goes on everywhere so don't stress about it. Just do your thing the same way you would in any other job.

Um, yes. I make a point to treat everyone the same and not listen to gossip. It works wonders. I'm here to work, not make friends. And while I want to get along with my coworkers, that can be done without acting like I'm in high school again. ;)

yep it goes on in every place I have worked.

Happily where I work we are one big happy family and we socialize outside of work frequently. Not really any cliques here.

Cliques are not always necessarily a bad thing. You have people you connect more with and so drift towards them. It becomes bad, when it singles out another and oppresses him/her.

Workplace psychology is a strange thing. Funny, it is a lot like high school sometimes. "I hate her/him"..."he's/she's a jerk"..."shhh, she/he did what!"..bla bla bla. I just go to work everyday, work hard, and yes, even have fun. I'll listen to what people have to say, but I try not to take sides or pass on what I've heard. That's a no-no that I learned in high school of course!

HIghschool? It's more like middle school. Or can be

where i work now, no, but where i was . . .oh my god yes . . .one of the reasons I left. A lot of unprofessional gossip and BS going on!

Cliques are NOT exclusive to nursing.

Same goes for my unit. Sure there are some people that get on your nerves a little, but that is with any "family". I notice that if any of the Nurses or Techs are having a difficult night we all pull together and make sure everything gets done and pts are taken care of. I love my night shift family :)

The unit I work on does have its cliques, but honestly, we still work very well together and everyone is willing to pitch to help anyone else. And outsiders or float nurses don't get the worst assignment; we try very hard to staff on acuity. Just don't assume the worst until you get to know the nurses you are going to be working with.
