New PCT offered a job at a large hospital for the night shift. Any advice??
I work on Tele/Med Surg as a PCT at night also. From 1900-2300 we have 8-9 pts. then from 2300-0700 we can have up to 13. Like someone said in a previous post, most of the pts do sleep; however, you do have those nights when no one sleeps and they are all crazy and pooping up a storm. Im doubting that you will be the only PCT all the time. There are times when I have been alone but I can count on one hand how many times that has happened. Its mostly because a PCT called off and we couldn't get anyone or we were low census and got slammed in the middle of the night. If you are the only one, don't stress. You can only do so much and the nurses are aware of that, most of them will jump in and help you as much as they can. Beware of the nurses out there that don't want to get their hands dirty.

Better to take an actual "PCT" class or just Phlebotomy??
I got hired at my hospital as a CNA, they offer a PCT class that takes 3 days and they pay you for going. They only taught Dry Sterile dressing changes, caths and reseal removal. Our hospital has a separate dept for Phlebotomy and do not train us in it. From what I hear from other friends that work in hospitals they have run into the same thing. Also we are trained how to do a EKG and are able to sign up for a class to learn it and become a Mon Tech on the Tele floor.

first day of A&P
I know the feeling, I am in my second week of A&P II. When you hear people say that II is easier than I it is. So far I understand everything that is being talked about. Mostly because I already have knowledge of some of the meanings from I. What I can suggest is get a recorder and record your teacher. I started doing that and following along again with my power points at home, it has helped out a lot. In I, I did the reading the chapter before class and that also helped out but towards the middle of the semester I didnt have a lot of time to do all of the extra reading. Do the quizs in the book at the end of the chapter and re read your power points. Those tend to have the most important info on them.

are there alot of cliques on your nursing floor?
Same goes for my unit. Sure there are some people that get on your nerves a little, but that is with any "family". I notice that if any of the Nurses or Techs are having a difficult night we all pull together and make sure everything gets done and pts are taken care of. I love my night shift family :)

Work Attire...
LOL Tampa Tech... We must work with the same system. Yay hunter green! Im a little used to it they told me to just buy the green when I got hired on. I started a couple months before we switched. I wish we could have gotten black. RT looks cool in their black.

I'm wondering if there's a major difference between PCT and CNA?
I became a PCT last year and love it. I work on a Tele floor of our hospital. We can insert foleys, accu checks, remove IV reseals and dry dressing changes. All this is depending on your hospital policy. And if you are on a tele floor like I am you will also get a chance to be a Unit Clerk and a Monitor Tech. I didnt think I would like being a Monitor Tech but it really isnt all that bad. Makes you understand the human heart just a little bit more.
