A rash of bowel oriented admit diagnoses?

Last month was scrotal absesses, scrotal edemas, scrotal laceration, scrotal this and scrotal that.

This month it's diverticulitis, bowel obstructions, perfed bowels, bowel this and bowel that.

It's weird. I was wondering if something was in the water, or if maybe people over ate candy at Easter. Yesterday on Med/Surg 3 out of 5 of my patients had diverticulitis. There are also a bunch of cholesystis cases. One of the Choles had to transfer to the unit today, she was maybe perfed.

It's definitely bowel week. We got x3 constipated, then x3 suddenly and dramatically unconstipated. That's on top of the postops. I'm developing a real dislike for the poo that comes from end stage liver patients on lactulose. So sticky you could build a house out of it.

I was in charge last night and 5 of 15 patients on our floor were GI bleeders. I'm with you. :)

Different pt population, different problems, but I have noticed that things come in waves. We'll get four ECMOs in a row (sometimes more than one at a time!), then months without one. Hearts come in groups, too - TGAs, then HLHS, then TOF... Right after the holidays we got a rash of 23-24wk multiples - I'm convinced the stress of the holidays made a bunch of women go into pre-term labor.

I have not noticed that, but there was one night where 2 people were on tube feeds, one was getting kayexolate - poop heavy night there!

I was wondering if the CDC tracks non-communicable diseases as far as season. I notice that after the Christmas Holidays there are lots of bowel things too. Also, one of my diverticulitis cases works for a CPA and of course tax season is very stressful for many.

Just last week end we got 6 admits on 7a-7m, 4 GI bleeds and 3 pancreatitis. All 4 GI bleeders were getting colonscopy preps done!

The week before that 6 admits with CHF, EDRD and COPD, all 6 with the same dx give or take. Yeap they come in waves and cycles!!

Aging population and crappy diets. Just my two cents worth. But I'm tired of LTC transfers because of constipation. These are 90yo dementia patients who usually wind up with colostomies. Fun times.

So weird, but we're bursting at the seams with omphaloceles and gastroschisiseseses right now, which is its own type of bowel-oriented admit dx...

I do LTC as an agency LPN -- last night on my 36 bed unit, there were 3 in contact isolation for stools (+) for C-diff.....
