My patient, who is leaving for OHS in the am, just told me what a "son-of-a-*****" he can be and that I had better "do what you need to do and get the hell out".

So I patted him on the arm, told him I would do my best and walked out reminding him that he had a blood draw in the morning.

Stupid jerk.

He picked the wrong day to try and bully me I tell ya.

I have his AMA papers ready to go, as he threatened to do that as well.

Bah.

I particularly like the guys who come in all built up, with lots of tattoos. Usually these tattoos say something like "Bad*ss" and maybe will have some skulls thrown in there for good measure. With few exceptions, these "Bad*ss" tough guys will either start crying once they're ready to go under, or they hoot and holler over having the IV put in...:lol2::uhoh3:

I have offered to stay over in the morning because they are short (only four nurses with no relief in sight). I have already decided I am handing this patient off and picking up one I have had before. Someone else can give him his Ativan, stick him in the butt with Versed and send him on his way!

Oh I know. I grew up with a father who would throw things through walls, but once I got older I realized he was a cupcake inside who just didn't know how to express himself.

Which is why I left this man alone tonight, let him have his peace, and will treat him like anyone else going to OHS this morning. With respect and compassion.

But let him mouth off to me one more time ladies...

You bet. It is very rare that anyone intimidates me. I have had people threaten to kill me and follow me home ( when I worked at a large inner city ED) so now nothing surprises me anymore. I look at the situation and act accordingly. Sometimes I am very direct and to the point, sometimes I am kind and try my best to do what ever I can to help them. But I am an old nurse and most people just don't talk to me the way they would if I were younger. Plus I have a very profound Texas accent and it really works to my benefit.

It reminds me of the time I had this biker dude as a patient. The shift before mine told me he was a PIA but that first shift hour nothing can get me down as I usually have just watched some comedy type show and am high on sugar. So I went in did my thing and he was the sweetest guy ever to me, but not to the CNA or the other nurses that went in when I was not able to. The oncoming CNA asked him and his response was that I was the only nurse that took time to make him laugh. Looking at him though, you think to yourself: this guy laughs? Morale of the story: Hard looking exterior, soft interior.
