Geez, I'm glad I'm not working right now

Published

I was recently diagnosed with metabolic syndrome. Not diabetic yet but on the way. My doc told me I need to lose weight and I need to lose it now, so he put me on Meridia. I have been dragging for two days. He told me I should adjust within a week or so; I don't think I've ever had side effects this strong to a med before, except for nausea with narcs. Good thing I'm off work right now, because I don't think I'd be doing my share.

Not cheap, Steph, over $100 for a 30-day supply. But if it works, it's worth it. I have noticed just in two days that I'm eating way less, and I'm not hungry.

Geez . . .when I first read that I thought you meant "over $100 A DAY" . .. . glad I re-read it.

I don't know if my insurance would cover it - not sure my dh's doc would even prescribe it . . . he is old school, pull up your boot straps by yourself . . .

(he is also the doc I've written about on the circumcision threads - doesn't use lidocaine).:uhoh3:

Ouch. Time for another doc?

I wasn't surprised that my insurance didn't cover it, but Hubs' insurance covers lots of things mine doesn't and even that didn't cover it. The pharmacist told me most plans don't.

But both my insurances cover bariatric surgery. Go figger.

Good Luck with the weight loss Tazzi! I have to drop about 40 lbs... if I want to walk without pain, that is. Have a bone spur on my femur that's pretty painful... hard to exercise much if I can't walk!! :uhoh3: It sure is frustrating!! Hope you adjust to the med soon!

Hi Tazzi, I am so sorry you are having all this trouble.:kiss :icon_hug: My doc put me on metformin for PCOS, I lost about 30 pounds! Think your doc might give you this in addition to the other med? I know the wt loss thing doesn't happen for everyone, but it might be worth a shot. And since you are on the verge of DM, and metformin usually won't drop your sugar too low, it might help. And its cheap, lol!

We already talked about it, Criss. He doesn't want me on antihyperglycemics unless I convert to DM.

Oh, well. Just an idea. Hopefully the med you are on now will help, and the side effects will lessen (quickly, I hope)

have you thought of trying the appeals process through either/both ins. plans?

Tazzi, I just want to offer you some encouragement and to tell you to hang in there. It is worth losing the weight. My doctor told me I had diabetes and put me on metformin, and it really made me sick to my stomach, but he wouldn't change me to a different type of medicine. So, I lost 40 pounds and starting following the glycemic index. My sister who is an LVN told me about it, and it has helped me more than anything else because I detest diets and don't ever follow through with them. Isn't it funny that the best medical advice that I have ever had concerning my diabetes came from my LVN sister and not my doctor? God bless nurses! Anyway, you might want to look into that. I'm not trying to market it or anything; I just know it works. If you do a search for glycemic index, you can find everything there is to know about it on the internet. I'm not taking any kind of meds now, and my last A1C was 5.4, so it really does work. My mom has type I diabetes and has started going by the glycemic index and has cut her insulin almost in half. Anyway, you will notice a huge difference once you lose a little weight. It is so much better that you are taking care of this now instead of waiting until you have DM. You're smart for doing that. I'm sorry that you're not feeling too hot right now, though. You get to feeling better soon! :flowersfo

Good luck Tazzi. How much do you need to lose?

When I thought I was becoming borderline diabetic, that was the kick in the butt I needed. No way was I going to be diabetic because I was FAT!!!! Well, my pride got me going and you know I've posted about my weight loss.

I wish you the best.
