Hey All,
I aM floored. I just received notice from GA Board of Nursing that they denied the endorsement of my MN RN license because I did not meet clinical practice requirements . When I called the board, they transferred me to a their Legal Nurse Consultant who stated that effective July 1, 2008 GA would no longer endorse RN license from Excelsior College students with no previous RN experience. She suggested that I go to my licensed state and work for a while then try again, but she could not give me a time frame.
Has anyone else experienced this. I thought we should at least have gotten some sort of notice/warning before this type of rule be adopted by the board. I am going to file a motion for reconsideration using an Attorney. Before I entered Excelsiors program I called GA Board to verify acceptance. I had been accepted to a traditional LPN to RN bridge program; I could have been almost finished their too. I am so sad right now. I have been crying for two days. I think I will need to see my doctor for Zoloft.
I have been an LPN for over 13 years doing Med/Surg for at least 10. I work on a hospital unit right now. THIS IS SO UNFAIR!!!:banghead:
CA Board of Registered Nurses will not permit Excelsior College nrsg grads test for the RN boards.

On Feb 3, 2006, The Ca State Appeals Court reaffirmed the CA State Board of RN's right to require 860 hours of supervised clinical practice for all RN grads applying to test for their boards. The court noted "Excelsior's CPNE consists of only a weekend course over the course of 2 1/2 days with a limited number of patients involving 2 areas of nursing.
VERY DISTURBING -
"The Court of Appeal acknowledges the numerous attempts by the Board to assist Excelsior for developing strategies for coming into compliance with California's requirements. Excelsior chose not to do so."
This is widely known. If you do a search here, you'll find many threads regarding this when it happened.
The CA Board of RN will allow some Excelsior students enrolled prior to Dec 2003 test. Otherwise you're out of money & time... and somewhere, some folks ought to be ashamed of themselves.
Again, this is widely known, and this info was made public by EC in advance of this happening. Those in CA who wish to do a distance program do not go through EC. Many of them go through ISU.
I believe you're under the impression that current EC students are unaware of CA's decision to not accept EC as a recognized program in their state. This is not the case, and if you wish to do a search here before posting such info, you will find that while you may be just learning these things now, it's old news here.
I am curious as to why you have such a strong interest in EC. What has your personal experience been with them?

I actually didn't know about the second part concerning the CA board trying to work with EC to figure something out. I think this is relevant. As a GA resident with several friends (all who will make excellent RNs) enrolled in EC, I feel that it is high time for EC to rethink and retool their process. The CPNE is not an adequate test. Many good candidates have failed it. These same candidates have gone back for repeat attempts and passed but at what expense? It does not promote learning but does place an undue amount of stress (and potential financial burden) on students. It seems to me that there ought to be an effort on EC's part to implement some type of clinical program that would satisfy the states.
It is important to consider that the number of states accepting EC grads is decreasing despite EC raising its entrance standards. I am sorry, I just feel that anyone willing to put in the time, money, and sacrifice ought to be able to practice in any state with no more or less restrictions than a traditional grad.
I think it is reasonable to say that we should not just point fingers at boards of nursing, but also at Excelsior. With all the changes to boards, Excelsior needs to make sure every applicant is aware that things can change at any time....at their risk do they do the program. This is a trend that isn't going away any time soon.
I understand what you're saying but if I'm not mistaken I believe somewhere on Excelsior's website it says to check with your state's BON before enrolling. Some of us did just that and at the time we enrolled Georgia said they would accept EC grads by endorsement (I've been enrolled since September 2007). Even after Zimsaint posted about her ordeal, I as well as other students called the BON and was told that endorsement would be on a case by case basis. Mind you, this was after the the "effective date of July 1, 2008". There was no mention to me of EC grads not being accepted at all. This is what has me so upset. Also I check the Board's website frequently and I didn't see anything there pertaining to the "changes" until the message Ms. Bond emailed to us. After then, there was a link on the home page of the BON's website. Now I cannot say for certain that the information wasn't there before hand; maybe it was there but that page isn't easy to navigate. I think this is what has so many of us upset with the BON.
This may have been posted already. I have searched but can't find it: is there an actual time or schedule for the Sept 17/18 thing? I would very much like to go for support or even to speak out. I will also mention this to some EC grads I work with who don't follow this stuff.
Ditto on that request - has the time and date for Excelsior to present their/our case been set? Lots of us plan to be there. GBON was so slippery about getting this so-called "law" passed that I don't trust them to be willing to face all of us en masse.
I haven't received a letter to that effect and my renewal fee is due next month. Some may think it foolish of me but I'll probably pay the fee and continue. We don't know what next month holds. Things may turn in our favor. I can only hope that all affected will continue to flood the email boxes of the legislators and governor and also continue to send snail mail.
My re-enrollment fee was originally due August 12th. I called to re-up and was told that since I am from Georgia they were extending it to October so we can wait and see what the outcome of the meeting with GBON is going to be. I plan to continue with my EC education also. I am finished with everything except the CPNE.
:twocents:I just called ga board of nurses and asked them if there was a certain amount of clinical hours in RN school to get in order to get a license and they told me there is no set amount of hours. aint that something
]I think the new law in GA is more vague, which MAY work in your favor when you confront them at your meeting next month. How can EC be out of "compliance" with a rule that states no "clear" curriculum requirement for clinicals? Here in VA that "500 hours" thing was just a way to completely shut the door to EC. I pulled out my 20 year old transcript from LPN school and added up my clinical hours... 659 total hours... and now VA wants me to do 500 MORE??? Good Lord! I already SURPASSED the required amount of hours that they are requiring for new RN students by 159 hours, not to mention my 19+ years of experience working in the field. As you can see, it STILL is mind boggling to me...

]It definitely apparent that this trend is going to continue and YES it would be ideal if BON's and EC could come to some sort of agreement regarding local preceptors. I wouldn't have a problem going to a brick and mortar school if I had one near me that provided an LPN to RN bridge program that was offered in a way that I could still work my fulltime job. I hear folks frequently saying how "they did this" and "they did that" so I should be able to do it too... kind of like when our parents told us their childhood stories of "walking 2 miles back and forth to school AND home for lunch everyday... BAREFOOT and in the SNOW"...
]I live in an area where the cost of living is out of this world, at 41 years old I obviously have plenty of bills, my husband and I have 3 kids ALL CURRENTLY in college at the same time ($$$), my job WILL pay for my education ($4500/yr.) but ONLY if I continue to work fulltime while in school... talk about being stuck between a rock and a hard place!
]My husband took an Accelerated BSN program while he was still active duty USAF and attended a 4 hour class one night a week for 18 months. I wish someone in this area would come up with a program like that for LPN to RN. I'm so frustrated today that I found myself saying "just forget it... maybe I'll just get out of nursing altogether" but when I seriously try to imagine being ANYTHING else...
]All I want to do is nursing.

]Sorry for the pitty party... just feeling really discouraged tonight.
