GA BON no longer accepting Excelsior education; Speak up Cont. Updates!!

Nursing Students Excelsior

Published

Hey All,

I aM floored. I just received notice from GA Board of Nursing that they denied the endorsement of my MN RN license because I did not meet clinical practice requirements . When I called the board, they transferred me to a their Legal Nurse Consultant who stated that effective July 1, 2008 GA would no longer endorse RN license from Excelsior College students with no previous RN experience. She suggested that I go to my licensed state and work for a while then try again, but she could not give me a time frame.:banghead:

Has anyone else experienced this. I thought we should at least have gotten some sort of notice/warning before this type of rule be adopted by the board. I am going to file a motion for reconsideration using an Attorney. Before I entered Excelsiors program I called GA Board to verify acceptance. I had been accepted to a traditional LPN to RN bridge program; I could have been almost finished their too. I am so sad right now. I have been crying for two days. I think I will need to see my doctor for Zoloft.

I have been an LPN for over 13 years doing Med/Surg for at least 10. I work on a hospital unit right now. THIS IS SO UNFAIR!!!:banghead::banghead: :banghead:

Hello GA girl and congratulations! I hope to soon begin my preceptorship in Macon as well. I would love to know what your experience was like. What days did you have to go etc. I know that you have finished. Have you actually received your license yet. How long after completion does it actually take to receive your license?

So would it be possible to also get an RN license in TN so I can work some there since I do not live far.... this way I can make some money on the weekends while I precept in Ga during the week?.......

So basically in a preceptorship you don't get paid for 350 hours of work?

350 hours is 30 12 hour shifts, Just do the darn shifts and be done with already.

Hi,I am an LPN for 35 years ,recent widow. Started at a local community College. I finished jumping through their hoops and applied to the part time eveing program .No they are telling me that the next program date for the part time evening is Sept of 2012. I said to them can I start taking some of the nursing courses and they said no. They told me to just keep taking classes. I am broke ,I work full time at a hospital on Med/surg/tel. I am trying to figure out what to do. I have been investigating and reading about what you people say about excelsior.I live in MA and work at a VA. Some people are saying not so good things about the clinical test. They are saying that they may not pass people because they want more money?????HELP

At least Georgia will allow you to have 350 hours of clinical preceptorship to license you as a RN. California refuses to even consider that. I want to do the Excelsior program so badly because it's convenient, cheap, and despite what others who haven't done the program think, it is a very good school and I've worked with Excelsior graduates. Good Luck to everyone!

California does not accept from this school either. I think the school should be responsible and meet the requirement of all state BONs. All other schools do. I think its pretty messed up to bust your butt in school and be restricted to entire states to which you can not practice.

It's the clinical portion that most states have an issue with. Sheesh, just set up a clinical portion with each state that way all students can attend Excelsior. Why does Excelsior have to have a problem with setting up a clinical portion? Most of us are willing to do one if one is set up.

Anyone out there who is currently or soon to do preceptorship for EC? I live in Georgia and I have 12 yrs as LPN but the BON only wants to accept a certain job where I worked less than a year. I am frustrated passed nclex months ago.

I also am a GN from Excelsior needing a Preceptorship. I live in Covington, Georgia and MCCG in Macon is Closer than Memorial Univ Medical Center in Savannah. How do you sign up or get on a waiting list for the RN Preceptorship? Lauren GN:nurse:

What ultimately killed Excelsior for California is that California's BON wants each program to offer concurrent didactic and clinical experiences... and if Excelsior was to do that, they'd probably be re-authorized as an RN program for this state. What would keep that from happening would be if they were to also require a local program liaison that visits the students during their clinical time. (That may also be the case now as well.)

Bottom line is that California apparently doesn't want Excelsior to offer their program in the state and found a way to prevent that while simultaneously finding a means for traditional programs to continue operating. Of course, that also had the effect of preventing/killing all other similar programs...

Just like other nursing students that don't get paid for their clinical hours - no different.

Sorry; but threre's no other places but Macon and Savannah,Ga. I met 2 people that live in Atlanta and had to come to Macon. One finished about 3 months months before I started and the other person I met started and finished the same day as I did in Macon. We are waiting on our license. I took Ga boards and she took minnesota boards and getting endorsement to Ga.

If you currently work in a hospital, then you can precept there.

So do I understand this correctly? If I currently work in a hospital and I do, I can do my preceptorship where I work? It doesn't have to be one of their "set" hospitals? Also, do we still have to do the CPNE?

Thanks!

Yep, everyone must pass the CPNE to graduate from EC's program. It is not and has never been a negotiable item, unfortunately! ;)
