GA BON no longer accepting Excelsior education; Speak up Cont. Updates!!

Nursing Students Excelsior

Published

Hey All,

I aM floored. I just received notice from GA Board of Nursing that they denied the endorsement of my MN RN license because I did not meet clinical practice requirements . When I called the board, they transferred me to a their Legal Nurse Consultant who stated that effective July 1, 2008 GA would no longer endorse RN license from Excelsior College students with no previous RN experience. She suggested that I go to my licensed state and work for a while then try again, but she could not give me a time frame.:banghead:

Has anyone else experienced this. I thought we should at least have gotten some sort of notice/warning before this type of rule be adopted by the board. I am going to file a motion for reconsideration using an Attorney. Before I entered Excelsiors program I called GA Board to verify acceptance. I had been accepted to a traditional LPN to RN bridge program; I could have been almost finished their too. I am so sad right now. I have been crying for two days. I think I will need to see my doctor for Zoloft.

I have been an LPN for over 13 years doing Med/Surg for at least 10. I work on a hospital unit right now. THIS IS SO UNFAIR!!!:banghead::banghead: :banghead:

Yes, I am working with them now. Prayers needed!!!!!

I am still floored, working with the law firm but this is horrible. Waiting and wondering but cant go to work!!!

Hi Resiak1... I am soo sorry to hear that you are going through this :crying2:... I live in Georgia also... I just have 1 more class to take b4 i graduate from excelsior... I should be focusing on my last class.. But I cant help but to worry about what trials and tribulations the Gbon will put me through, because I dont have the acute care hours they are requesting...

So are you saying they will allow you to take the nclex first... Then after you pass, if you dont have the acute care hours they request, they wont issue you even a Temp license, until you have found a preceptorship, and they have approved it... Then they will issue a temp license :uhoh3:...

But because you haven't found and been approved for a precetorship, the Gbon wont even give you a temp license?

Also, have you been to any hospitals to try and get your own preceptorship started?

Last question... What are the Attorney's doing about your issue?

I also live in GA. Have you all thought about taking the board exam for another state,

working in that state to get experience and then endorse back to GA...

Hi to all,

I can witness what you are going through with GBON, I passed Ga boards 10-10-09 and I have been searching for someone to precept me here in my home town (Augusta), but no luck :o. There are 2 places I know that will precept Excelsior College students which are MCCG Hospital in Macon, Ga and Memorial Health University in Savannah,Ga. If you are already working in a hospital; your job can be used as a precepting site aswell if you already don't have hospital experience. I can't begin to tell you how I felt when I discovered that I could not get my RN license until I precepted 350 hrs , I applied to both places to get on their waiting list. Well I finally started preceptorship in Macon, Ga which is 2 1/2 hrs away from my home on August 26th 2010 and I completed 350 hrs last Thursday morning (10-28-10) after completing 12 1/2 hrs on night shift and a year after passing NCLEX RN :coollook:. I know it's not fair, but it is required if you really want your RN license in Ga. Now I await on the clinical director in Macon, Ga to send my paper work to GBON. I'm looking at another week before I finally get my license that I worked so hard for. Don't give up, hang in there; you've already gotten the hard part out the way (NCLEX). :clown: I will keep you posted.

GAGIRL1

Congratulations, GAGirl1! I'm in same boat that you were in - passed NCLEX-RN for GA in Oct. and I'm on waiting list to do my preceptorship. Which days of the week did you do your preceptorship at MCCG, days/nights? I'm trying to make plans as far as my job schedule. Any info would be much appreciated. Also, what area of nursing do you plan to practice once you receive your RN license?:yeah:

What about getting your license in another state and work at the VA where you are.

Specializes in Med Surg,.

I met an excelsior nurse, her skills were outstanding. But she too had trouble finding employment.

So basically in a preceptorship you don't get paid for 350 hours of work?

The last time I checked the GABON website, there's no compensation for the preceptorship hours. Many of the students also work full-time jobs while working their preceptorships.

Oh ok I got ya.......

Are there anyplaces near Marietta or downtown Atlanta to do the preceptorship???

Sorry; but threre's no other places but Macon and Savannah,Ga. I met 2 people that live in Atlanta and had to come to Macon. One finished about 3 months months before I started and the other person I met started and finished the same day as I did in Macon. We are waiting on our license. I took Ga boards and she took minnesota boards and getting endorsement to Ga.

If you currently work in a hospital, then you can precept there.
