Funniest Complaint on Press Ganey Scores

Published

:nurse:hey guys, we got our press ganey scores and surveys from feb...

come complaints were

no food service in the waiting room.....

all the nurses were overweight

nurses were too loud and always on the computer (we have computer charting)

no parking due to ambulances!!!!

call me crazy but when did er become the hilton?

Do you think it ever occurred to management (especially those who have the nerve to base pay raises on this crap) that those patients with --- as they perceived --- "bad" experiences are more likely to respond to these BS surveys? That perhaps those who received good or even excellent! care don't bother to fill these out? That maybe--- just maybe--- the results in these surveys are skewed toward the negative?

I was teasing a Dr. last night. She was talking about a pt she was arguing with a nurse over. To make a long story short, she was reminding the nurse about ABC's of life support. I told the Dr, " I thught you were trained better than that, It's not ABC ......It's PABC. You know Pres Ganey , then air way etc.. silly ,,,,,silly Dr. "

The next day, he caused a royal ruckus because she was now eating her own tray, and we wouldn't give him one, please note that even breakfast guest trays cost $10 and lunch and dinner are even more. Do you think our NM supported us? No, she said we should have just ordered a tray for another laboring woman and given it to this guy...and reprimanded us for not thinking of that..dxxxxx if you do and dxxxxx if you don't.

Ok. This is something that has confused me for a while and I've never gotten an answer. Does the other laboring woman get charged for the tray she never even laid eyes on? And if her stay is covered by her insurance company, don't they get charged ultimately? Wouldn't that be considered insurance fraud? Not being cheeky, just really want to know!

Thanks,

DeLySh

i have been reading this and am wondering...is every patient sent a press ganey survey. or do we get it from. I want to give my nurses good stuff but i have never gotten one.

I think it is by random selection. In my case, I was in the hospital twice, and got a survey both times. I wish I had made copies of them before sending them in. They were not Press Ganey surveys. This hospital has since gone to Press Ganey, however.

In retrospect, the surveys followed the hospital's philosophy of not believing in patient education. There was a total lack of questions concerning clinical information. Instead, there were bizarre questions about room decor, and whether I was asked to be an organ donor (I told them I had donated my body to the local medical school before they had a chance to ask. The patient rights folder had an organ donation pamphlet, too. A pamphlet on the Informed Consent process, along with a pen and notepad, would have been much more useful).

I gave them highest marks on the surveys, and also wrote to the hospital to thank them, and to let them know that I was doing well.

Our raise is based on part of PG report. We didn't get a raise this year....We have a 400 bed hospital, however, entire wings are closed due to lack of nurses (pay is very low) and one month only 7 patients replied to the PG Report. They were the ones piXXX about something. The patients that were happy apparently did not fill out the report. I don't consider the report accurate unless 100% of patients fill it out...

Our raise is based on part of PG report. We didn't get a raise this year....

That is utter BS.

I guarantee you, when I decide to stop traveling and take a regular staff position, I will ask about this in the interview. If they base merit raises on PG scores, if they follow scripting, if they strive for five!!... I'm outta there.

That maybe--- just maybe--- the results in these surveys are skewed toward the negative?

Pssh. That'd require critical thinking and some understanding of human behavioral patterns. Silly, silly Emmanuel.

But in all seriousness, I feel you. When I worked in the restaurant industry we knew that customers would tell one person if they had a good meal, and ten if they had a bad one. It was like our mantra. You'd think PG/our managers could figure that one out.

OK, here's a good one:

*My mother did not get a bath for two days. When they did bathe her, they used soap and water and bathed her like a hog.

OK, not having been threre, and having never given a hog a bath, I can't say for sure what happened, but, what would they bather her with if not water? That hospital did not use bath packs.

Kinda makes you wonder.

"Discharge nurse (me) was great, but very busy and seemed overwhelmed."

An actually good observation, would be nice if ALL the pts would write things like this ... but ends up coming down on me anyway.

management had time to look up who was d/c RN and I got called in to a meeting for this because no matter how busy I am... they pts should never see this. I asked them, "Would you like me to walk slower? Take my time? Because then this would have said...'RN took 3 hrs to get me d/c'd.'"

Recorded in the notebook we have survey results in after going through customer relations (I think that is the department name), with objective comments entered after the complaint has been reviewed (if that is necessary):

"Pt's mother complained that pt contracted lice while a patient on XX unit. This complaint was later found not to be true."

I also liked one about how there were too many people in the rooms all day "doctors, nurses, dietary, housekeeping... families should receive a 'menu' and check off which services they feel they need that day."

Can anyone tell me how to tactfully ask in a job interview whether or in what way a hospital uses PG? I'm still in school, but with 12 years in the bar/restaurant industry, I learned a long time ago what types of jobs to avoid - I don't care what kind of money their servers claim to make, I refuse to accept any job that forces its staff to sing "Happy Birthday. It's demeaning, and so is forcing an educated professionals to memorize and recite a script. If it's really as bad in the real world as you all make it sound, I'll be at the bedside for even less time than I'd planned before I'm back in grad school. And they wonder why there's a shortage...
