Anyone else applying for FSU's Accelerated BSN program starting Spring 2010?
hi ya'll! if you havent seen us posting much, its because the program keeps us EXTREMELY busy. for real! i have pretty much no free time, and when i do, i'm spending it with my hubby! don't plan on making any trips home or big plans unless you have a break (spring break, 1 week b/w spring & summer, & 2 weeks b/w summer & fall)! it's just so much work & you'll get behind if you don't spend your weekends working on papers, assignments, studying for tests, etc. our group has been great though. it's really small - only 17 of us. we work together good and really theres no other way to get through. each class has objectives for tests, so we split them up as a group (if theres 100 objectives on a test, each person will get 5 or 6 objectives to work on and email them to the rest of the group) - you get the idea. our teachers have been great so far. there have definitely been some 'bumps' and 'glitches' as far as last minute scheduling, extra fees, and etc. but we are a VERY vocal group and give them TONS of feedback, so i know they've already planned some changes for the next groups that come through. i think it's a good program overall, just a lot of work! if you don't think you can hang, then definitely go the normal route! you have to be EXTREMELY motivated to learn the skills, practice on your own time (if you ever have it!), etc. i hope this is making sense. i'm a little tired and cant believe im even spending time on this when i have so much to do! LOL...
so yes it's doable but it's hard. we've all passed so far (have to keep 75 in all classes to pass) (:
don't let patho intimidate you too much - yes that is a very hard class as well and keeps you on your toes. but if you can do well in that then you should be fine! i know a handful of people failed it and couldnt continue with the program. it's nice to go ahead and do it and get it out of the way though - and it does come in handy later!
good luck to you! don't know when i'll be back on here, but thought i'd post something (:
Hi ceekitty,
I see you said some people failed patho and could not continue in the program, does that mean you can be admitted to the program before having patho completed? Having to take patho is stressing me out because I would have to have it completed by December and I just submitted my apps to FSU and the FSU CON. I know I probably wouldnt be able to get in an online patho class for Fall 2010 :smackingf
Hey,
Don't stress yet - it shouldn't be too hard to find a patho class for fall! Like PBteach said, we had people who took it online (Kenyon College, Ohio)... So look into that! Patho is a requirement for the program - it is a prereq for many of the classes, plus you really dont have time to take it during the year anyway! (we are swamped with the schedule as it is - summer is a killer!!!)... But we are 1/2 way done with the whole program this week - so that is amazing!!! Just finishing up our first hospital clinical... must say it's been interesting but very busy. Pretty sleep deprived at the moment and studying for a final!
Just look up that online patho class and good luck!
Ceekitty
FYI: Butler Community College just added another online pathophysiology class for Fall '10 (18 seats available). FSU def accepts credits from this school and the out of state tuition is not TOO bad. This is for my fellow Spring '11 FSU hopefuls.
eta: Thanx ceekitty for the encouragement :) I looked in to the online programs and called the CON and they sent me a list with BCC on it :)
Some tips for future accelerated students:
- memorize normal lab values
- learn as much as possible about electrolytes, acid-base
- the kidney never goes away
- Patho class will be very important so get all you can out of it!
- Try to store up on sleep before you start - lol!
- Keep exercising to reduce stress and not gain weight like I have with all the hours spent sitting in class and studying!
It will be worth it! :) Good luck, and let me or ceekitty know if we can help!
I am sad to report I must withdraw my app for Spring 2011 I couldn't afford this extra patho class and the HESI is due by the end of this month. With an unforgiving job and a three year old it was too much coming too soon. Well I am still in the running for FAU and USF for Summer 2011 OR LSUHSC Fall 2011. Thanks for all the help and info if all else fails I will apply 2012.
jazziphat,
Sorry to hear you are running into obstacles. If you still want to pursue FSU, speak to Brenda P. - she may be able to find funds for you through our Dean. This is a challenging program for anyone with young children, but hang in there - we have several parents in our class with 2 yr. olds and they have been successful. We are heading into our last semester, and that feels SO good! Stay in touch and let me know if I can offer advice or help in any way! :)
Hi everyone! I read this thread alllllll the time and it is the most helpful and informative website I have found online. I love reading the convos from last years applicants and I'm sure you are all so close to being done with the program so congrats!! I applied for spring 2011 and my stomach has been in knots since the sept 1st deadline. I went to FSU for my undergrad but moved back home to Miami and now trying to get into to nursing school anywhere! It's soooo competitive.
Jj1999 - Im in the same boat as you; A's in all my sciences and an 87 on the HESI. Have u heard anything about the number of applicants or the class size they are accepting this year? I'm going to start calling the CON everyday until they have some news! Good luck to you and hopefully will see you in class!
Good luck, both of you! Your grades and HESI scores sound really good! I heard a while ago that they had not received that many applications. Hopefully, you will receive some good news very soon! Be sure to post when you hear! :) I'm here to help or try to answer any questions!
And yes, we are all very excited to be close to the finish line! One more week of classes, and then our 6-week internship! It's been quite a year, but worth it!
Almost a !
Hi Woodie...i did my undergrad at FSU and now back in Miami too. I emailed my adviser this week and she said mid-October is when they were going to decide. She did not say anything else. Let me know if you hear anything from CON?
Also, thanks to pbteach for all the helpful info. Good luck with your internship!!!

NikkiNJesus Im glad you posted this message, but I'm curious to hear the responses as well. I have all the same questions as you. Also, I'm currently taking Pathophysiology at FSU this summer and I'm already getting extremely overwhelmed. I have done very well in all my sciences, but for some reason, I'm just worried about this class. I was curious if anyone took at FSU and if you have any advice on doing well in the class. I know everyone is probably thinking...you're taking it in the summer, of course it's alot...but it's actually ALL summer long, so it's pretty much the length of a normal semester. My first class was Monday and we had 3 chapters, 3 in depth study guides and I quiz all due by next class. I want to read and do well, but I feel like I don't even have enough time to read all these chapters...
I'm really anxious to hear about everyone's first semester in the ABSN program! Please post when you get a chance. Thanks and congratulations again to all of you!
