FSCJ Summer 2014 Hopefuls

Published

Hello, everyone!

Since I have not seen one started on this site, I thought I would go ahead and get the ball rolling. This thread is for anyone hoping to get into FSCJ's Nursing Program for the term starting in the Summer of 2014.

Hey guys - I know this may be slightly off topic, but I recently found out that the FSCJ BSN program doesn't require RN experience anymore to apply?

Has anyone else noticed that on the website? ?

Yes Manny, that is true. An academic advisor told me that, and the lady you contact for more information about the program confirmed it.:)

Indeed! The problem is that, when applying, they also want to look at your nursing school transcripts, so just settling with C's probably isn't an option. The good thing is that they don't require the 2,000 hours of experience, which is great, especially considering that BSN is becoming the standard nowadays. Best wishes, everyone! :)

It is the standard for sure. Especially in the field I plan on going into Pediatric Oncology. I know I wouldn't even be looked at without the BSN. Anything less than B's are not an option in nursing school. Scares me to death that 79 is failing. Lol. But just more motivation to do your best I suppose. :-)

My nerves are shot! Lol in anticipation for the letters, I'm now second guessing my 1st choice of nights...if I even get it. I have a 2 year old and just trying to figure out which is best. Blahhh..I've given it all to God and trying to keep doubt out of my brain. :-) nerve wracking....

Hi Retajet,

Youtube dosage calc for nurses & practice. PM me your email & ill send you the practice sheet we used and the values you have to memorize (L mL Kg Gm Mg Mcg,

1/2 oz = 1 Tablespoon = 3 teaspoons = 15 mL etc) and the med term list you have to know for med term/med abbreviations test within first few weeks.

Watch youtube videos for foley cath & central line dressing change, pay attention to them working in a sterile fields & not breaking them.

Review basic anatomy, bones & muscles. That will all help.

kjkkm- Can you email me that stuff too? My email is [email protected]. That is so helpful! :)

Hi Udikawp,

you will get in with your score so congrats!

i started in Spring

Every Monday is tests for everyone. Usually 2 tests. One at 9:30, one at 10:45 with an hour for each.

The rest will depend on the section you sign up for during orientation. Its a lottery system. Your section is you entire schedule & you stay in the same section the entire program.

You will have Techniques (skills like cath, shots, bed bath etc) from 8-1:30 one day a week, every week.

My Pharmacology is 1-4 and hybrid so we go about every other week. Some sections have pharm 9-12. Still, an average of 6 hours a month.

Concepts (fundamentals) is also hybrid. Three hours (i go 1-4, some sections go 9-12) approx every other week.

Health Assessments is 3 hours once a week.

Depending on your section/schedule you may have one class a day, some sections have 2 classes in one day so they have an extra day off but a very long day. each class is packed with information & there's still SO MUCH left to basically self teach.

You wont chose individual classes or teachers, it all goes by your section. In the lottery i drew like #127 out of 144 so i got what was left, which actually ended up working for me :)

Each section has 12 students so as the sections fill up they close & the latter #'s get what's left.

They expect you to already be proficient in things covered in pre-reqs. Anatomy is huge. There's no review & no time is wasted. You immediately jump in over your head. There are also dosage calc & iv calc tests (not taught) you have to pass to stay in the program. You get one more chance if you make less than 80 the first time. Mandatory score goes up each term. You are out of the program if not passed on second chance. I struggle in math but passed all first time so far. Its not bad, just a lot of pressure.

Not much (actually nothing :) ) is organized, be prepared for that! Keep copies of everything & stay ahead one step, always be prepared.

Hope that helps. Good luck. Feel free to ask if you have more questions.

thanks for all the helpful information. When the semester starts at what point do we start taking tests every monday? What do the tests cover? What about the very first test we take, what does it cover? How can we best prepare for the very first test?

If for some reason, I get a schedule/section from the lottery system that is a problem for me because of personal reasons, what can be done? Would I just be stuck with it?

Hey Beatrice,

Our first test was 3 weeks into the semester. Pharmacology & dosage calc. The next week was Health Assessments & Concepts. For pharm you'll study lecture notes posted from your teacher & chapter objectives. There are not study guides for any class.

We were given the chance to trade schedules with each other if we found someone willing to give away a choice schedule during the lottery (no-one is willing lol) so what you get is yours. Keep your schedule open mon-fri 8-5 then after getting your school schedule plan around it. A few people went to the dean about their schedule not working & were told to re-apply for the program when they have time. there are not exceptions. Same for all the deadlines for forms, etc to be done before orientation. If its not done, reapply when you have time.

Keep in mind you'll spend extra time at school studying (ALOT!) and practicing in the skills lab. :)

WOW! I heard that clinicals do not start until the second half of the semester. ok, so lets say my class schedule is Monday-Thursday. what what would be an example of a clinical schedule with that class schedule?

Whatever day you have Techniques/Skills class (mine is wed 8-1:30) will be replaced by clinicals (7-1:30)

okay thank you! I was worried that clinicals would be 12 hours shifts and I do not think I would be ready for that right away. Will there ever be times when we have to go to clinicals for 12 hours? I remember hearing or reading that somewhere. I must be getting that confused with another school. So, is the techniques/skills class on a day by itself? which site do are you assigned to? What are all the different sites (that you can remember)?

Yes, you will do 12 hour clinicals in later terms.

Techniques is a day by itself because its a long class. The clinical sites rotate hospitals & LTC all over Clay, Duval & Nassau Counties. We don't all go to the same one at the same time. Clinical sites for each semester are built in to whatever section (schedule) you are in.

We are over half way through Feb. What do you think, about 2 more weeks? Hopefully!
