]Hi all, this is my first post... but anyways here goes. I currently attend Kingsborough CC and after the spring semester of 2099 i'll have an associate degree in liberal arts. Now i've already taken a few of the prereqs for nursing like Bio Human Anat/Physio, General Pysh, Human Developmental Psych & English. I'm not even going to give kbcc's nursing program a shot because it'll be just a waste of time. I know Hunter would be a waste of time too but i'm willing to give it shot there instead of kbcc lol. Now i'm looking at Hunter College website and it says that Microbiology, General Chem w/ labs & Organic Chem w/ Labs, and Intro to Statistics are needed. I'm thinking about staying at KBCC, taking the rest of the prereqs there, then transfer to Hunter and give it go. Would Hunter accept those credits I took or will I have to retake some or all of the prereqs?
I'm looking into LIU in Brooklyn also but i'm not really sure of their requirements such as the acceptance of transfer credits or if i'll have to repeat a course because my some credits won't get accepted.
Any help/advice/recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

I think you'll have a bigger chance at LIU than Hunter. I think you need to be enrolled in Hunter before you apply for the program. why not try applying to Kingsborough's program? you have nothing to lose and if you're accepted you can decline if its really not what you want.

How is Kbcc's NURSING program a waste of time? Clearly you haven't done your homework. They accept approximately 100-110 students per semester. Although you must have a pre-requiste gpa of 2.5 you will not be ADMITTED with that gpa. It is a very competitive program to GET into and STAY in. Their NCLEX passing rate as of June 2008 is 91% which is higher than any CUNY school( Hunter, Medgar Evers, Laguardia etc.) Also, majority of their gradutes find jobs within 2-3 months if not sooner. Kingsborough has a very reputable name!! When Nursing Recruiters, Hospitals and or the public hear that you graduated from Kingsborough with a degree in NURSING, they are very impressed!! In the end it is your choice, but I dont see why you would want to pay 10,000 a semester at LIU, or take classes that youre not gonna need at Hunter( which in your words, also a waste of time) . What school would you like to go to since both Hunter and KBCC are "a waste of time?" Good Luck with your decision!!
I believe what OP meant by Kingsborough being a waste of time is that the program is too competitive to even dream of getting in it. Thats why I said he/she has better chance to get into LIU's program. ALL CUNY and SUNY nursing programs are competitive.

When I say that kbcc is a waste of time I didn't mean it in a negative way. I mean't that it's wayyy too competitive to even try applying to. I know how great their program is.... And I really want to get into a BSN program and not an associates program so that's why I was leaning more toward HUNTER & wanted to try my luck there... jeez whats with the attitude?
@ gaileyt, since I have to be a student at hunter, can I take some prereqs at kbcc and then take the last 2 prereqs(whichever classes I decide to take) at Hunter then? I hear that seats for the prereq classes @ Hunter fill up fast so I was wondering if I can take majority of the classes @ kbcc and then take the last few remaining classes at hunter... thanks for your help.
And hey if I don't get into the nursing program at Hunter after all is said and done, i'll look into LIU, NYU, etc etc... as long as they are accredited and they offer a BSN... not a big deal... I won't curl up in a corner and cry because the all mighty hunter declined me LOL.

Hey hey hey now Cherry. As helpful as you have been to me, I can't have you implying that KBCC will have the highest passing rate this year. lol LaGcc had a 97% passing rate in 2007, the highest in the STATE not just CUNY; so we'll have to see what the numbers are at the end of this year. Everyone from my graduating class that I keep in touch with has passed so far, so we'll just have to see how the cookie is gonna crumble when it's all said and done.
To the OP: all of the CUNY school are extremely competitive, so you can try Hunter or retake some classes. As far as LIU goes--be ready to graduate with massive student loans. There's nothing wrong with private colleges, but please shop around before you make a decision.

Does anyone know LIU's Nclex rate? I've heard that their program sucks and is hard to STAY in. If you drive, Molloy College in LI is a better bet. Honestly, Hunter would be competitive but it doesn't hurt to try. Just don't put all your eggs in one basket.
Best of luck!

I believe you can do that, but it would still be best for you to go see an Admissions Counselor in Hunter...I suggest for you to look at other schools around too. Hunter is not the only CUNY school with a BSN Nursing. And your chances of getting into a Nursing Program is higher if you try applying to more than one program(granted that you have made your pre reqs and other requirements attractive enough).
Whichever way you choose to go, God bless :loveya:
So sorry Eccentric if you felt that I have an attitude. I am not known to have one, i am actually the opposite . Just trying to give you some information about Kcc. Again Good Luck with whatever you choose!!

I contacted the BON and the passing rate for last year was 95.9% for LIU. I think for this year it is a little higher, I think 98% but I haven't verified it yet. And yes, it's hard to stay in this program, just like it's hard to stay in any other nursing program you get into. And yes, there are complaints about the school, just like complaints students have about other schools.
After being in LIU this semester, I've come to the realization that LIU gets a bad rap. I am doing absolutely GREAT so far, but I am a hard worker. I can't say the same for those who come to class (or don't), pay no attention, talk and text, then cry when they fail an exam and then say it's too hard. Nursing School isn't easy so I didn't expect LIU to be easy. I am happy with my decision to attend LIU SON.

Hey Eccentric,
To answer your questions about requirements, classes, etc. You definitely should visit the advising/admission offices of the colleges for which you want to apply. I don't know too much about those school as I go to UT (way down in Texas), but I know that some schools are very picky about where you take certain classes. For instance, my school insisted I tak pharmacology, all pre-nursing related courses, and anatomy/physiology HERE before applying to the professional program.
I am telling you this b/c I've seen so many ppl get discouraged and switch majors/schools or pay for 1-3 extra semesters trying to meet the school's requirements.
Another thing, if you want to speak with advisors/admissions, you may have to be PRETTY persistant i.e. making phone calls, e-mailing. Also, see if any of the schools you are intersted in have a course equivalency webpage on their website that help you see which courses transfer and which don't.
One thing that is universal to all nursing programs: do WELL in your science courses and DON'T give up!!
