Fox News calls CNA a nurse

Sorry, this really irritates me. Fox seems to be the most sensationalist of the major outlets.

An unfortunate 20 yr old woman died in a bungee cord accident in Colorado. Fox listed her as a nurse. I was suspicious because of her age, so I looked her up and she's a CNA.

My heartfelt condolences to the family, by the way. But, this thread is about the all too common practice of calling MAs and CNAs nurses. I know the news media is generally sloppy with their facts, but this burns my britches. :mad:

I read some FOX articles online to get an alternative point of view. These days, each outlet is so slanted, I think it's important to look at all sides.

My cousin died several years ago in a parachuting accident during an air show.

He was an attorney.

In this instance, I don't think it's harmful.

I do understand the irritation with every person in healthcare who isn't a doctor is a nurse perception though. My ire with it is driven by a concern for safety though. There are many instances where that is dangerous.

This isn't one of them. I wish the family of this person all the best.

Seems to be? I think that ship has officially sailed and become "is" as evidenced by the current occupant of the Oval Office.

The CNA/RN thing annoys me too but there's nothing much we can do about it.

I wrote a letter to FOX:

I looked up Ciara Romero on the Colorado board of nursing website after seeing the 20 year old headlined as a "nurse" on your website. She was a certified nursing assistant (CNA), not a nurse.

Your reporters should get their facts straight. A pet peeve of many nurses is that the media, and others, will refer to medical assistants and CNAs as nurses.

I know might seem trivial relative to a young woman's death, but it reflects badly on FOX as a news outlet. You already have an image and credibility problem with many Americans. I'd like to see that improve, since you sometimes cover things from a different angle than other news outlets. You can start by being more scrupulous with your facts

Well....glad we cleared that up...kind of funny how folks get pushed out of shape and question the integrity of news outlets when they have the "inside" knowledge of their own particular profession, yet take most everything else as accurate when they're as uninformed as the reporters.

Journalists today are rarely thorough enough to tease out the technical subtleties of the stories they write. This has nothing to do with sensationalism. This is the state of journalism today. Most of what we hear, watch or read is inaccurate in ways far worse than calling a CNA a nurse.

As did the Daily Mail. In their article. Nurse, 20, dies after falling 70-feet during bungee jump accident in converted grain silo but investigators say the device was functioning properly. Which, according to timeline of articles returned on a Google search, was posted 9 hours prior to the Fox article you provided.

I was unable to locate the original post, but it is likely that both Fox News and the Daily Mail picked up the story, as did the Australian site News.com.au.

ETA: I do agree with the premise of your letter to Fox regarding being more scrupulous with, and getting the facts straight.

You said you were suspicious because of her age. Well, you do know that a 20 year old could be either a LPN or and ADN/RN don't you?

I also watch different news channels, do my own research on different sites etc. and then form my own opinion, I believe the country and people individually would have much better mental health if all did this!!

I also feel bad for the girl and family of the deceased and think it is important that the public know the difference between CNA, MA, LVN or RN. I have seen many people call themselves a nurse, once by a vet tech (really?!). Kudos for letting FOX know!!

Well Fox and the Daily Mail are very similar in their "mission", both ideologically and financially. They're both tabloids. There's a reason they are referred to as "Faux News" and "The Daily Fail" respectively.
