Forced to Quit My Job To Follow My Dreams

Published

I just need to vent a little,so here goes......I am a single mother of 3,who has always wanted to go into the Nursing field. But for one reason or another,I've never been able to pursue it.After over 10 years of putting my dream on hold,I decided that now is the time.So I began to study and prepare,I passed all the necessary tests and was accepted into school, with a start date of Jan 4,2010:yeah: My plan was to continue to work at my non-nursing related job(part time):typingand go to school evening/weekends. However everything changed just last week, when I got a phone call from my school informing me that they didnt have enough enrollments in the evening/weekend program,so therefore it was being cancelled, they gave me two options:1.Wait until May(and hope there would be enough evening/weekend enrollments) or 2.Switch to morning classes Naturally,I choose to start in the morning classes,I mean,Why wait til May and there was no guarantee? I could just take my employer the new school schedule and then I could work evenings instead, since we stay open til midnight,Right?.....WRONG!! I was told that they couldnt change my schedule and that I am expected to be at work on monday morning at my regularly scheduled time, which is the same time time I should be in my first class!!:angryfire:banghead:

So I would just like to know if any of you have ever been put in this situation? What did you do?How did it turn out for you? also any words of encouragement, would be greatly appreciated and By the way,if i didnt mention it before....I am choosing to follow my dreams and to my former employer this is what I think of your desk job:throcomp:

As a single mom of 2 boys and 5.5 months away from graduating, I say go for it. Take out student loans to make ends meet. Eventually you should be able to get a job as a CNA. You will find that you wont want to (unable) to work due to the amount of studying that you have to do, best to get with an employer who understands the amount of stress that nursing school is. My current job they are very understanding because they are all nurses and have once been where I am at. I thought about becoming a nurse when I had my first son, he will be 11 when I graduate, you can do it.

I too am quiting my job so that I can pursue my goal of being a nurse. I know how i will manage financial thr first year of nursing school, but after that I have no idea. I am just gonna pray that everythinh will work for the best. I hope the same will happen for you. I know it is worth it, but it will be a tough road ahead. My last day at my easy $13 per hour job is Jan 13.

Congrats on being accepted to nursing school! You have your foot in the door. This is your dream and you are about to make it come true. It's too late to turn back now, so don't let that be an option. And don't let anyone stand in your way. An old friend of mine always tells me, "Life unfolds as it should". I agree and live by that motto. Your situation was meant to happen when it did, just as it did.

I see in your profile that you have worked in customer service for a while. Is there someone above the person at work that you can plead your case to? Maybe you can call out on Monday (since you have school), then go to speak to them right after class?

If they refuse to change your schedule, you will just have to apply for another job that allows you to work nights or weekends. Maybe you can even get a customer service position to work from home. And you could also apply for financial aid or student loans to help a little.

I'm a single parent of one. I have made my fair share of excuses over the years, for not finishing school. But the bottom line is, there is no "perfect" time to go back. Almost always, it will be a struggle, and sacrifices will have to be made. But in life, that is true for just about anything worth having. And for all that you will endure while going to school, the rewards will outweigh them in the end.

I started my RN program in May of 2009. I won't graduate until December of this year. I had to leave a great paying job that I enjoyed immensely. I am now working as a night shift hospice nurse (as an LPN through an agency). I am making less money and am not happy with my job. But I know that once I finish school, I will eventually be able to have a job I enjoy again, making more money. And I will be able to hold my head high as I walk across that stage, because I didn't give up on my dream. ;)

Good luck!

OP, I had to divorce my old career just to get the prereqs done. I knew that these would clash as my old career often was an on-call one as well. I picked up a private practice office job to get health insurance and income while taking my prereqs barely doing it all with the commute to nite classes, homework, and sick parents to deal with. For about a year's time added up between parents, it was work all day and evening till 7:30pm, then get McDs on my way to hospital till midnoc two days of the week. The other three were work till 5:30 and commute to make nite class by my tail then commute home, maybe study, fall into bed. We worked Saturdays too. Repeat.

Yes, I knew at some point I'd have to quit working. If nursing turned out to be easy (:yeah:) or take little of my time (:yeah:) I could keep working. So, I did save $$. My doc didn't want to split my job to part time, so that was that.

Many of those who didn't plan for the scenarios they could foresee with a plan A, and a plan B, suffered. Some I know ended up dropping the program just because of having too much on their plates. Adrenaline lasts only so long. :heartbeat

I got a job as a nurse's aid while I was in nursing school at a local hospital. They were great and worked around my schedule giving me time off when needed for exams. Iwas then hired by the hospital as an RN. It was the greatest thing and I got lots of experience in the process!

Blessings to you...

i had a very similar situation happen right before nursing school. i started this past fall and 4 weeks before school started, my comfortable research job downsized and laid me and 20+ others off. i was devastated  while i don't have children, i completely understand what it's like to consider the prospect of having to start a new job and nursing school; especially considering how you probably had things planned and mapped out just as i did. but like all of the other posters have mentioned, god will always make a way. i found a new job 2 weeks after being laid off that pays better, has more flexible scheduling, and allows me to use my previous educational background. god has truly blessed me, and he will take care of you and your family too :hgu:

I'd be cautious about this because there are many, many posts now that hiring is slow from students with tons of debt that haven't gotten nursing jobs and have huge monthly loan payments due.

Sorry I don't want to sound rude, but I am new to allnurses.com. How do you post a title?

just click on "new thread" in the forum.

Go for your dreams. Don't let an obstacle stop you from doing what you really want to do. I am a firm believer it will all work out. God will provide.

Good luck to you. I am excited for you to get started on Monday...now go kick butt!

Im not trying to rain on your parade but if I was in this situation I would wait until May to make sure your children have what they need (food, clothes, shelter). If you have money saved up then go for it but I would always put my children first. Look at all the hungry people in our world, I wouldn't count on 'God'. Sorry just my 2 cents.
