For RN's) How much do you take home after taxes????

Updated:   Published

Hi, I would like to get into nursing and was wondering how much you guys RN's take home after taxes and all.

Thanx

FWIW:

I personally have not found http://www.salary.com very accurate. I have searched in several different professions I am knowledgeable with and not found it very helpful.

I do think it is inappropriate to ask an acquaintance, however, I think it is a completely acceptable question in an anonymous setting.

I am part of a professional society (less than 3000 members) who sponsors an annual salary survey. It divides salaries into categories such as setting, experience, geographical region, etc. This is one of the most valuable functions of this society. Any information which would reveal a person's identity is excluded. It gives all members a feel for competative salaries/benefits/vacation time and the like. It make negotiating much easier and gives us as a group some control in raising our compensation. It allows us to further our profession, increase our value, and gain much deserved respect. I think the nursing profession could benefit greatly if it could share such important information using a similar format

Specializes in Emergency, Outpatient.

I think that nurses need to talk about wages. Knowledge is power.

Specializes in Neuro ICU, Neuro/Trauma stepdown.

:specs: You could start with yours. As a nurse aide in LTC I work two 16hr shifts a week, q sat and sun. I bring home (no kids, standard health ins) $440 bi-weekly. oh, and BTW, I sweat my:monkeydance: off for that!

and may I mention, I get pinned on friday. :studyowl:

:balloons::cheers: :biere::balloons:

I REALLY DONT THINK THAT THIS IS SOMETHING THAT SHOULD BE SO PERSONAL WHEN DEALING WITH FELLOW NURSES. ITS A QUESTION IF YOU OR OTHERS DONT ANSWER THATS YOUR CHOICE, BUT THE REASON FOR THIS WEBSITE IS TO GAIN KNOWLEDGE ON THIS PROFESSION SO IT WOULD BE HELPFUL TO ANSWER BUT HEY IF U DONT SOMEONE ELSE WILL.:trout: TAKE A SHOT IM A NURSE!! LOL

Is that the only reason you want to get into nursing, because you think you will be making good money? If you are really passionate about becoming a nurse the $ should not matter.

Specializes in Happily semi-retired; excited for the whole whammy.

Money shouldn't be all that matters, but it most certainly should matter. Nurisng is hard and we deserve to be paid well for it.

Go to www.salary.com put in a job tile/occupation, and zip code. The site will tell you what RNs make in your area.

Specializes in ED, ICU, PACU.

I'm curious because, although I know it varies, I've never been in this tax bracket before. I know my job-after-boards starts at $20.37, but I wouldn't have a clue as to what to expect after taxes. is there a generic percentage that you can count on being deducted, or does anyone make around this much that wants to fess up to how much that equals in bring home pay on a 40hr week?

:flowersfo

You can use http://www.paycheckcity.com to calculate you specific taxes (and take home).

The average nurse does 36 hours per week. There are of course, differences ranging from 34.5 hours to 37.5 for the 3 day a week 12 hour shift depending on the actual clock in/out times and meal breaks.

Also, there can be deductions for medical, retirement...

I think that you have asked a legitimate question. As a student I also would like to hear it from the "nurses" all around the country themselves, rather than turn to a "website" that may need updated or is based on one place. Of the 31 comments, I believe there were only 2 or 3 that came close to giving a real answer. Although there was good info on many of the other posts.

I agree that should not walk up to just anyone at a party, on the street, at the mall, and ask how much do you make? But this is a place for sharing info. If someone doesn't want to share, they go about their day reading other topics.

I know it is different for everyone based on shift, salary, withholdings and so on. But those could be easily addressed by explaining I worked 72 hours in 6 shifts, after taxes, medical, 401k..... I made $...... last pay period. Two months ago I brought home $...... but I worked 5 hours overtime at $..... for a total of ..... hours.

After the many vague answers and answers that were from nurses that choose to basically say NOYB, instead of moving on with their day, I have new questions.

WHY IS THERE such a problem with sharing? Is there a concern that if you are paid well people will flock to your area? Are you concerned that you are not paid well? Maybe it is like in my husbands case. There is a clause in his contract that he is not to share his salary information.

I just don't get it but maybe its because I am old and been around the block too long. Wish I was done with school and had a pay stub sitting around, I would give you an exact example for my area in Florida.
