For RN's) How much do you take home after taxes????

Updated:   Published

Hi, I would like to get into nursing and was wondering how much you guys RN's take home after taxes and all.

Thanx

It really depends on so many things. The starting salary for experienced R.N.'s in my area is $25./hour, but you can make lots more running your legs off in the hospital, especially with shift differential, week-ends, specialty areas etc.

And friends I know who work in big hospitals, in major metro areas of the country make a LOT more than that, so nurses working in a nursing home, on day shift, in Mississippi and nurses working week-end graveyard shift in an ICU in New York City would have salaries as different as day and night.

Not a reason to go into nursing, IMHO. Going into a field you enjoy would make more sense to me than just picking a career because of the salary. In that case, think anesthesiologists perhaps. Not nurses.

Where the heck in TN? I live in TN and where I am new grads in the hospital start at $15!!!!!! As an RN! Night shift is like $17. It sucks. It's such a big corporation, too.

Not to come off as being harsh but IMO I think this is a pretty personal question. I think people don't like to answer this directly because it isn't anyone elses business how much an individual makes. It depends on location, field, experience, etc. There are lots of sites/organizations out there that can give you a rough idea on pay.

I don't think anyone is being nosy, they just want to know how much they can expect to make. Not only that, no one knows who you are on here and I STILL don't see why people are so secretive about their salary.

I don't know that my salary would help you much, because I work in a social service type position for a non-profit and I make much less than my hospital counterparts. Still, it could be good for a laugh...

Boy am I glad to live in California! There is a local hospital I hope to work at once I finish nursing school that pays new grads $32.04 p/h. I guess the tradeoff would be the high cost of living here. I live in northern California so the cost of living is not as high as the Bay Area/San Francisco or Southern Cali areas but it's still high compared to the rest of the country.

i'm curious because, although i know it varies, i've never been in this tax bracket before. i know my job-after-boards starts at $20.37, but i wouldn't have a clue as to what to expect after taxes. is there a generic percentage that you can count on being deducted, or does anyone make around this much that wants to fess up to how much that equals in bring home pay on a 40hr week?

I'm divorced, and claim 1, and find that my taxes taken from my paycheck bi-weekly are ~30%. Personally I find that a ridiculous amount, considering I still have to pay towards my medical insurance, and we don't even get vision benefits. My ex has the same amount taken from his check, and that is not counting 401K or any of that stuff. Hope this helps!

here in southern texas you are paid based on your years of experience. like in my case with 3 years, i get paid like $21.5 base but since i worked nights i get $3 differential and another $1 more on weekends and 1.5% of base pay for OT. so for a months time work with like 180 hours clocked in including OT. i get about $4500 less 21% tax and medicare and about $50 of health insurance my take home pay would be like $3000. hope this gives you an idea.

Paycheckcity will give you what your take home will be after taxes. It is very accurate, to the penny, in my experience. I am not an RN yet so I can't offer any advice in that category, but my advice would be to go to the specialty forum that you hope to work in, or the state forum in which you reside for a more geographically accurate estimate of salary ranges. Then you will be well equipped to go to http://www.paycheckcity.com and do a calculation using that salary and your own personal deductions. http://www.salary.com is also a good resource but can be very inaccurate at times. I wish you the best in your nursing career!

Through eons of time, there have been just a few questions that are considered rude to ask and one is a woman's weight, another is a woman's age and third is how much a person makes.

It has always been so . . . . don't be surprised when people don't want to answer.

And don't castigate folks who want their private information to remain private.

As someone has mentioned, there are many sites available on the web to get an idea about how much money people make in different geographic areas, plus they give you cost of living information too.
