For those awaiting acceptance letters from Northern Illinois University

Published

My question to all of you that applied for this year, what is your GPA?I am trying to find out how competitive the program is this year. The waiting game on the acceptance letter is killing me and I have heard we wont find out til end of March.

My GPA for the pre-req courses is a 3.0 . I know that is not the best, but I have a friend that goes there and her GPA was lower than mine, and she was admitted to the nursing program this past fall.

Thanks for your response.

Why withdraw though? I don't understand. :( There's no harm in waiting a few more weeks and finding out for sure. I genuinely think you have a good shot, and I hope you decide to stick it out.

I guess you're right. I highly doubt I will get in... even with a 3.88 GPA in my nursing pre-reqs courses. I have A's in everything and only two B's (chemistry lecture and nutrition which are 3 credits each). I still have three classes to take, and that is probably what will hurt me. But, who knows... maybe they will look and see that I applied in November and see that there is still this semester, and summer semester to take only three class (and even fall semester for those who are chosen to start next year). I will be completely shocked if I get in. Anyway, I'm going to start studying for the PAX-RN which is required to be able to apply at Waubonsee. The deadline to apply for their ADN program is September 15. Thanks for your encouragement.

FYI - I got an email from one of the nursing admissions advisors (I had previously wrote an email asking about when the letters go out). This was her email back to me:

Thank you for your interest in our nursing program.

We are currently reviewing applicants for the 2012-2013 school year. Decisions should be made in early April.

Karebear, I understand your concern. I also have two classes to finish as well over the summer and I'm hoping that it won't go against me, but all I can do is my very best and wait and see. I would guess that many of the applicants applying aren't perfect either, so you never know what might happen. And your GPA is well above cut-off for the past few years, so that's another reason to be positive. :) Thanks for the update too. :) I feel like my heart is stuck in my throat... and probably will be until I get my letter. I'm hoping it's early April rather than later; I just wanna know at this point.

For everyone that is awaiting an acceptance letter (including myself). Over the weekend I met a nursing instructor and my husban's cousin's house that teaches at a different schhol and she was encouraging me to apply to every nursing school possible. I was explaining that NIU had over 400 transfers trying to get in this year, and she told me that just because it is that high of a number does not mean they all qualified. She said usually 50% of the students will be dropped before decisions have been made. So if that is the case, we are still looking at 200. Out of those 200, it depends if everyone has completed all of the pre-req's, and out of that what the gpa was. I explained my GPA to her and the classes I have taken so far, and she said I have a good chance of getting in, but again she teaches at a different school, so know knows what the people at NIU are really looking for.

I just thought I would throw this out there to remind everyone that they still have a chance. Keep your hopes up and good luck!

I just wanted to thank everyone for updating this discussion so frequently! I too am anxiously awaiting for my letter from NIU and its been nice to know I'm not the only one suffering through the long wait. Hopefully we'll all hear something soon! For those of you that still have pre-reqs are you planning on taking them at NIU this summer or somewhere else? I was told since I have so many hours (this will be my second degree) that I have to request permission from NIU to take classes anywhere else. I will be commuting and would rather continue to work full time and go to the community college nearby than drive to and from dekalb all summer. I am hesistant to send in my request to take classes elsewhere this summer before I find out if/when I am accepted at NIU as I don't want it to affect my admission. Is anyone else in the same situation?

I am currently taking two science courses at a community college by my house. This will be my second degree as well, and I was never told I needed permission to continue taking classes at my community college ( I plan on taking summer courses as well). I would call NIU again and speak to a different person.

Hooray, more people! Now I don't feel so alone in the wait.

Reese - Thank you for the update and the positive morale boost. I'm trying to think positively too!

Megs - I'm in a very similar situation as you. I would also like to finish my pre-requisites over the summer at my local community college simply because it's closer and more convenient, but I have a ton of hours already... and I believe only 66 semester hours transfer (which of course I'm way over), so I wasn't sure if I should be taking the last of my pre-requisites at my local CC or at NIU over the summer. I'm scheduled to talk with an advisor on April 5th and was going to ask specifically about this, so I'll happily share any relevant information that I find out. If anyone hears anything else though, please let me know. :)

hey guys...

I am joing this thread really late. I also hope to get into NIU but I also applied to other schools as well. Did you guys apply to any other schools? and if you have all of your pre reqs done including stats wh. Do you guys think if i were to be accepted after finishing all the pre reqs they would start me in fall??? I have heard of people who have all of their pre reqs done yet they make them wait a semester and give me a later start date! Do you guys know anything about this?? and also, this is a great thread, everyone is keeping everyone updated and its great to see something like this.

Everytime I see another comment has been posted, my heart stops ~ I'm waiting for someone to say they found out a decision lol. I'm not sure how they figure start dates. I'm actually hoping that IF I am accepted, I will be chosen to start in January. I've got three class left to take after this semester, so my summer semester would be super busy if I got accepted and was chosen to start in August. I didn't apply to any other schools and am counting solely on NIU's decision. I shouldn't of put all my eggs in one basket though, because I am *expecting* a denial letter... even with a 3.88 GPA on nursing pre-req courses. It's just too much competition. =/

heyy

yea I am pretty much done with everything so I really hope they give me the august spring date if I were to be accepted. I have everything done so lets hope so, trust me, I put all my eggs in 2 baskets so I am just as nervous as you are. I hope I get into both and I can choose, but that would happen in a perfect world lol. given my luck, ill be lucky if I get into one. as far as you go. your gpa is very very high actually. your .12 off of a 4.0 so nothing to worry about. think of it that way and you will be ok. I think maybe the decisions come out in mid april. so we will see. I understand that this is sooooo long, but its time to be patient, and trust me. I want march to end so so so bad becuase I feel that this month has been dragging!

What did you get on Accuplacer? And do you know if that is heavily weighed on their decision?
