Florida Roll Call ......

Published

Ok - who are you, what do you do, where abouts in Florida do you live (or if you are not in Floirda, what part of Florida do you want to move too), what is your clinical area, you status (CNA, LPN, RN, Student, Whatever) and anything else you might want to add.

Some of you already know me, I lived in Florida for a little over 20 years. An RN, I worked and lived in Sarasota. Went to nursing school at Manatee Community College and also University of South Florida at Sarasota. Great place .... love the beaches and the area is truly a wonderful place. I generally work surgical recovery and while in Florida, I worked in post open heart step down and also worked as a nurse manager.

I am a single dad raising three children (all are now teenagers - whew is this rough!). They are really great kids and I am a very luck father to have them. :uhoh3:

Hi Amy, Welcome to allnurses and Florida...i'm new here also, but a native to Florida. Sorry to hear that you had to experiance the hurricane in New Orleans. What made you decide to move to Florida? Just wondering since there are so many hurricanes that run through here. I'll be graduating this year so i can not advise you on the pay, but from what i have been reading Florida is low paying. I did however come across a report on one of the $$ magazines that put the states in rank based on cost of living and pay rate. Florida was in the top 20 if i recall correctly. I hope you find what works for you here and welcome again to Florida.

Winnie Palmer and Arnold Palmer are right next door to each other, they share a breezeway for transport...etc. I graduate this weekend. I worked in the NICU as a tech until just last week. I started there with the intention of working in the NICU as a GN, but had to follow my heart and passion in labor and delivery (I have 7 years L&D experience).

They take GN's into the NICU, in fact they are in great need of RN's, GN's, etc. Winnie will be a 112-bed NICU, the average census is 85-100 babies right now, but expected to get even busier now that they will have the space. They average 11,000-12,000 deliveries a year with 50% of those deliveries attended by NICU staff.

So if it is NICU you want, you should go for it when you are ready! It is a great organization. I can't say enough about my LOVE for this hospital, and the entire team of nurses, doctors, techs, arnp's, custodial, (ok everybody) I have the priviledge to work with everyday. I cried the day I drove by the Ronald McDonald House on my way to the interview...I finally am able to live out my dreams in an organization I proud to work for. Not everybody can say that.

When do you graduate? Anytime you have a question I can answer, let me know!

Hello all Florida Nurses,

I'm a UK RN and I've just returned from my latest trip to Florida and guess what I brought back with me? A job!! :chuckle

I started the process 6 months ago (immigration issues), passed NCLEX last month, and just signed with Florida Hospital as an RN. I have to wait for my green card tho, the hospital are petitioning me, could be a long wait from what I hear.

I would appreciate any information from anyone who works for Fl Hosp. I have a home already near Celebration Health and had chosen there as a convenient place to work. However, I've been told that as an employee of Fl Hosp, I could probably get a position at any of their sites. I'm now thinking of looking further afield to live from the Disney area, somewhere a little more tranquil.

Any advice anyone?

Tina:)

Hello again Floridians :)

It seems so long ago I posted above, so just checking in with an update. Finally, I have completed the long immigration process and will leave the UK for Florida in 4 days time :w00t:

My plans remain the same, I will be working at Florida Hospital Celebration Health. I have a position in Ortho and will be working 12 hour days, 6 out of 14

Hi Letina, i too am a UK nurse, from the North East. My husband and I would love to come to Florida, but it seems to take ages to get through the NCLEX and then actually get the Visa. How long did it take you from first applying? any other pointers for us?

Thanks

Hi :)

It took me 17 months from starting the application process to getting my visa. The best thing to do to get the information you need is have a read through the stickies on the International Nursing Forum on here. To be honest though, I feel quite fortunate to have everything done in just 17 months, some of the UK nurses have waited anything up to 3 years. I personally know of only one other UK nurse (madwife2002) who did it quicker than that, she's also the moderator of the UK Nursing Forum, so if you post on there, Kay (madwife) will no doubt respond, as will a few others. Suzanne4 is the moderator of the International Forum, and she will also help....what she doesn't know isn't worth knowing :wink2:

Hope that helps,

Tina
