First year problem

Nursing Students General Students

I'm shortly going to start my first year as a student nurse, i'm thrilled to be starting soon as this is an area that i've always wanted to work in. Unfortunately feel that I may have jepodised this by, whilst at a festival and rather drunk, I dropped an E and then went on to smoke a small amount of marujana. I can't believe that I did it but now i'm scared stiff that I might get chucked off the course before I even get started.

I'm really not trying to dodge any bullets here I just want to know from those of you that have already started similar courses weither this will be tested for.

Specializes in Pediatric/Adolescent, Med-Surg.

In my program we were drug tested prior to starting our first semester of clinicals. If we had to take any time off from school, we were also drug tested before allowed readmitance. I'm assuming you'll get a urine test. Marujana stay in your urine for 2-7 days (assuming you truly only did use a small amount, if you've used it heavily, it could take up to 3 months to clear). Extascy clears in 1-2 days, and the alcohol should be gone in 3-5 days.

Seriously though, I hope you've given serious thought to your actions. You may be lucky and get away with it this time, but in the future, if you get caught, you could wind up kicked out of nursing school, losing your job, arrested, etc. I really hope you realize that your future is on the line when you mess around like that.

Wow, you have more than a first year problem! Being a nurse requires a maturity and responsibility level you're not ready for. Only the serious need apply....

Just a heads up, we had a drug test for every student in the program the day of orientation in addition to the test we had to take to be accepted into the program. We were also told to expect random drug tests through out the program which makes me think that it is a real possibility that you may be in for a drug test in the very near future. If you do manage to "dodge the bullet" then I think it would be a good idea to rethink some of the behaviors that you are engaging in now. Is a little bit of a party really worth your future?

Specializes in Ortho, Neuro, Detox, Tele.

As a new graduate of a very well respected nursing program, and a new respectee of the profession....I would be honest in saying that I am NOT comfortable knowing that you engage in this behavior while "off the clock"...so to speak. A nurse represents their profession while in public...and while having a few beers would be ok, how would you like to be taking care of someone who OD'd at that same rave?

Being a nurse means making a committment in your life to hold yourself to professional standards at all times.....and I personally do not feel that you are at that level yet. I seriously hope that your drug screen is caught...if nothing else, for the wake up call that you need.

Perhaps I may be perceived as being a bit harsh...but you need to realize the consenquences of your actions in some way. GL with whatever happens.

Specializes in CDI Supervisor; Formerly NICU.
I can't believe that I did it

Why can't you believe it? Were you forced? Were you rendered unconscious and force-fed the drugs? Were you under an alien influence? You did it because you CHOSE to do it. You don't just stumble upon a X tablet.

If you want to know what I think, I'll tell you. I think you need to work...hard...on accepting personal responsibility before you start trying to take responsibility for the lives of sick people.

I don't even care that you're a drug user. That's your business. But your lack of self-control and your lack of taking responsibility for your own actions concerns me because you want to work in a very important field where your behavior could cost the lives of my loved ones.

Specializes in Cardiac.

I was randomly drug tested 3 times in nursing school with very little warning. So if you don't get tested, and you get out of this, heed it as a warning and stop.

Oh, and I've been tested at least twice-again, at random, while practicing as a nurse.

Well I think you just screwed yourself. You think this is site protects your identity? Wait till someone finds out where your going to school and gives them a heads up. They may decide to do a blood test or other test instead. You are irresponsible and have no right being a nurse. I take my career choice very serious. You will have access to narcotics and it seems that you are not trustworthy to actually do the right thing. I am very worked up that you would actually post on here, you have no buisness being a nurse. Your actions are more like that of a 16 year old.

Im not going to beat you up because I think the majority already covered everything for the most part.

Just thank you know who, if you get away with it this time.

Next time you will not be as lucky, I am also not comfortable with the thought of having someone "messing up" as my nurse at my bedside.

You made your bed..

WOW OH WOW! And you told that for all the world to see!

Something that was taught to my kids in the DARE program at their school..."JUST SAY NO!"

Drug testing in NS is random. Hope you get straightened out!

Stop trying to scare this girl. Maybe she is only 18 years old. I for one, am not so tightly wound, that I have forgotten what it was like to be young and out with my friends. You don't know this person and to tell her she has no business being a nurse is WRONG. Look around your profession, ask a few nurses or doctors for that matter if they have ever tried any illegal drug. I think you could be in for the shock of a lifetime. Nurses are not NUNS. If every nurse were judged on decisions made as a teen or young adult there would probably be very few nurses. Relax and have a glass of wine.

Look at her profile, she is 28 not 18 and by that age if you are willing to be responsible for other peoples lives then you need to not be so easily influenced. What happens when she has to stand up to a doc and she can't go against the crowd.
