Nurse eating their young?
I agree with those that are saying this is just rudeness. We have a new grad nurse that started nights on our unit that acts the same way during report. I think it is her attempt at "proving" herself as a new nurse. Try to trip up the nurse with experience...I just smile and finish my report.

do RN residency programs really make a difference?
I am in month 9 of a 12 month RN residency program. The program incooporates RNs from all over the hospital in different practice areas, the majority of us are May 2010 graduates so we are all very new with similar experience levels. The thing that I think has benefited me the most from the residency program is the monthly meetings. Every month we are scheduled to meet and we discuss the challenges we have faced as new grads in areas like communication, nurse practice, and patient care. The residency has really given me the opportunity to use get to know nurses from other areas in the hospital and see that my experience is not unique to the area that I work. Because of the residency I have never felt like I was just thrown out on my own without support. There is good and bad with everything and there are times when I feel like the residency is like the last year of nursing school repeated. We have an EBP project that we are required to do as part of the residency and I have to say we are all kinda dreading yet another big project. There are also times when we have discussions/power point lectures that focus on communication and "overcoming workplace obstacles" that I think are too little too late since we are all working the floor in different areas most of the time we have encountered the situation long before the discussion telling us how to deal with the problem is brought up in the residency program. Overall, I take the good with the bad and I feel very fortunate to be a part of my RN residency program and I do feel like it has helped to set me up for success as a new RN. I still have a ton to learn but it has not been time wasted as far as I'm concerned.

Asked why I want to do office over hospital in interview...
I started as an LPN in an office and I loved it, as an RN I have found it much harder to find a job in an office but I would go back in a minute! I currently work in a super busy med/surg unit in a large teaching hospital and to be honest I would go back to an office because I like the relationships that you can build with the clients and I really miss being able to meet people when they aren't experiencing a major life crisis unlike where I am now. If you enjoy the office environment, I sat more power to you.

Looking for a new job after 4 months...
I worked in LTC for 3 months before getting the job that I have now, I did let my employer know that the facility was just not a good fit for me and that I was going to be applying at other facilities. I had support from my DoN at the LTC which made the transition very stress free for me. Good luck in your job hunt!

Feeling kinda dumb
So, I'm a new grad in my first nursing job. I am in week 4 of a 6 week preceptorship on a busy M/S unit. I am at the point where I am delegating responsibilities to my preceptor and juggleing the load of pts by myself I can ask for input/help along the way if I feel like I need it. Long story short, had a pt with abd surgery, SP 48 hrs, day 1 of my shift she was up, walking, talking, and doing well, day two of shift she was in bed with severe N/V. I was only able to document 1 emesis of 50ml, the others pt's family member flushed before I could measure it so just documented " multiple episodes of emesis." Notified surgeon of change in condition, surgeon had written an order to DC fluids, dc foley to get pt prepped for discharge. DC'd foley but asked surgeon to cont with fluids as new N/V had developed during shift, also asked for an order for Phenergen, which surgeon reluctantly agreed to. The last day of shift surgeon is making rounds and writes an order to DC fluids, surgeon states that a "50ml emesis was not reason enough and ask to continue fluids." I went back and looked at I&O from previous shift and output was around 825 with fluid intake of 1300 on IVF during shift. Talked to my preceptor and nurse manager about it, both agreed the condition change was worth a call to doc at the very least...why do I feel like I just made some huge dumb mistake! I'm kinda dreading having to see this surgeon again, I feel like I made such a big deal out of nothing! Ok...vent over!

Supplies for New RN's
Red or diff color pens, they help to make your notes to yourself about things that need documented later stand out a bit. I also carry a small little note pad in my pocket for quick notes to myself such as I&Os, pump rates, PCA doses, etc. I'm a NG on a busy MS unit as well and I find those are the extras that I need to help keep me organized while I'm still learning the ropes.

A&P2 or Micro at Colorado CC online?
When I took classes through the ccc system I did not get a choice about who I could take as an instructor. They may have changed the system since then. The instructors that I had were decent, no real complaints about any of them.

A&P2 or Micro at Colorado CC online?
I took both A&P 2 and Micro through the CCConline system and in my experience the lab manual is only sold as part of the labpaq. I don't think that you could buy it separately. The labs are pretty in depth and there are questions that you will not be able to answer on the lab reports without doing the work included in the labpaq.

All About the NET
Thanks Csantos! I have been doing my practice tests for 10 days now and I take the NET Friday. I feel good but yesterday when I read that there may be geometry on the test I got a little weak in the knees! :uhoh21:

All About the NET
Just curious as I am taking the NET this Friday about whether or not there are any geometry questions on the math section of the test. I have been working the practice tests but there seems to be a lack of geometry questions although I have read that there are geometry questions on the NET. I need to dig that part of my brain out of storage if there are geometry questions on the test. Seriously, there are many, many cobwebs in that part of my brain as I have not accessed or used geometry since the 10th grade! My 10th grade math teacher said we'd use it the rest of our lives...hmmmph! Any info would be appreciated, Thanks!

" Lies, Damn lies and statistics"
Oh man! That guy sounds like my stats teacher from round one about 6 years ago. I did all right in the class but only because we had a TA come to the rescue of the WHOLE CLASS one day after the instructor came in with a chart showing how pathetic our class was in comparison with classes he'd had in the past...seriously...a chart!! I can empathize though I am not one to be able to offer any study tips for stats. I squeaked by with a C several years ago and have yet to use it since. Best 'o' luck to ya!

Anyone take Microbiology and A&P 2 same semester?
I don't see how it would be in the best interest of the school to only have 2 out of 35 grad/pass. I have been under the impression that schools can lose their accredidation (couldn't spell that to save my life evidently ) if enough of their student don't pass the NCLEX. With the shortage of programs & long a$$ wait lists around here it seems like La Junta would want to maintain a good balance of passing student v. those that can't handle it.

Anyone take Microbiology and A&P 2 same semester?
jdarcy, I agree, the CCCS is a bit on the hinky side. I feel like I rarely ever get any communication and when I do there is only one adviser at my school that I get clear answers from. I think I would have had a hard time listening to someone that told me to take Gen Bio before Micro...what would be the link? Glad you were able to get around that. Good luck with your LPN/RN transfer.

Anyone take Microbiology and A&P 2 same semester?
You got to sleep 7 hours in a row? I'm so jealous! The previously mentioned toddler makes sleep a commodity for me these days. lol I agree with you and previous posters that have stated that A&P2 +micro pales in comparison with NS but if the option exists to allow one to fully commit to 2 of the more difficult pre-reqs individually (let's face it most of the pre-reqs are not that hard; ie: Eng Comp, Psychology, Human Growth etc) then I would take advantage of the fact that these are pre-reqs and do not necessarily need to be taken all at the same time. Just my
