Ok I am an RN but without 1 year experience I am nothing (vent)

Hi guys,

I have completed school, graduated with high honors 3.8 GPA, Dean's list, President's list, leadership distinction, speak and am fluent in 3 languages, computer savvy great reviews, letters of recommendations from professors and unit managers from when I was on my clinicals... And no job! My resume is good, has been reviews 3 times, with a cover letter, starting ACLS PALS out of pocket to see of it draws interest.

Have 3 promises, but have been told there is a new grad hiring freeze, although they are paying 2,500 for relocation and 5,000 bonus for experienced 1+ year nurses

I guess God has something good cooking for me and slow roasted tastes best!

Keep the faith. I waited six months to get a job. You can do the ACLS, this will most definitely be a plus. I did mine recently too. You will find a job soon.

Don't get discouraged so soon. Some people are over the two year mark without their first job. Hopefully you will get one soon. Good luck.

It really scary i wish going into nursing school they would have given a little warning about the job market for nurses. I believe the hype of nursing being recession proof and a great career in demand. While I am thankful to be a nurse, I would love to actually be hired. I have been actively looking for almost a month now, and I haven't had one interview. The struggle and the fight to do well in h.s. then nursing school is like an anti-climax now that I am an unemployed nurse. But stay positive, that's what I'm trying to do.

I get that they want people with experience, but gimme a chance, I am a nice guy and I love nursing!

Anyways, I am getting ACLS, PALS, and whatever accreditation, certificates and volunteer work I can untill the end of the year. I am now studying Chem, Spanish and statistics, because I want to test out of those classes, and get the credits for my bachelors which I plan to start year, I want to test out of as many classes as I can and shrink down what I need for my bachelors.

I have 2 managers that are just waiting for this "budget freeze" to be able to hire me, I had a call today from one of them, and they said that regardless of the situation, the hospital is not hiring GN's at all! He said that if within 1 month nothing changes he will hire me as a Nurse assistant and be able to transition me after 1 month. Lets wait and see.

I really hope that works out. Even though I just became an Rn in July I am going back to school (just one more year) to get my BSN. I am also getting ACLS, and PALS certified too. I'm hoping this will make me look more marketable. Because doing extremely well in h.s., then nursing school..is not good enough.

Haven't heard from the hospital yet, but I have an interview for a perdiem position in a SNU unit, which I could bridge to the hospital! Finger crossed guys! and they would pay for my RN-BSN!

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. Not having a job really stinks, especially when you need to work.

there are tons of jobs, and they are still giving you 5k bonus plus 2500 for relocation, there are so many 13 week contracts at 40 dollars per hour in florida. Although they want that 1yr experience and that is a barrier hard to break.

I know that my school was very upfront about the poor job market for new grads in this economy. I think many New Grads and students that are finishing school soon started Nursing school when the market for new grads was still booming or just in the start of the current decline. I don't think it's fair to place so much blame on the schools. Just my :twocents:.

Update to my situation:

Got a job! yey! I start monday!

It's perdiem but, I will be working 2 doubles ( two 16 hour shifts) Fridays, and Saturdays. It is on a Skilled/medsurge unit. so I wont quit my "office job". Will just have to work 7 days per week!

and I also got another job In new Mexico, which I will start my 12 week training in January, so I get to get about 6 months experience on this job.

Be persistent guys!!!!
