i started working as a new grad rn and sad to say im not enjoying my job anymore bec, of the poor management. nurse pt ratio is 1:9, sometimes they forced us to take IMC patients with no cna, workload isnt fair. i know pts were not happy either bec we were not always around when they need us, call lights werent asnwered as quickly as possible. im planning to look for another job but most of the qualification is to must have atleast 1 yr experience. i honestly dont want to wait 5 more months bec some unfortunate events might happen with that kind of practice in our facility.

There's no harm in looking around?? You do have SOME experience, so I wouldn't worry about the jobs that list that you need experience, because you have some. A lot of jobs that say "experience preferred" or whatever will sometimes still hire a new grad w/o any experience.

Like I said, there's no harm in looking around for another job because I mean, you may be looking around for a long time anyways because of the job market. So I say at least take a look around.

yeah but come on? 1:9 patients in an in-patient setting sounds down right dangerous. Its one thing to get your foot in the door but are you willing to do it in exchange for losing your license?

to the OP: you might want to try this post in the first year after licensure board (under general) because Ive seen some similar situations over there.

Hey, I totally understand you. I'm on the same page as you...

I feel total appreciation for getting a job as a New Grad, but I HATE MY JOB!!! I dread going to work each day.

I work on a cardiac floor with 1:6 patient ratio which may not seem like a lot compared to your 1:9, but our patients are critical and just one step down from ICU (basically the same patients but not on vents).

I tried applying in another unit (Med/Surg) but I just got an e-mail today saying they want someone with more experience (I only have about 5 months right now). :( And the bad thing is that I already told some of my co-workers and news travels fast in my unit, so I wonder how they are going to treat me now that they know I don't want to be there!

I guess I'm stuck there for now. I truly am grateful for working as an RN but I wish I didn't feel so bad about my job.

majority of our IMC pts are on vents which makes it harder to turn them when there is no cna to help us, we would have to wait for another rn which will take time bec they themselves were busy too.

I was in the same boat, im a nurse with only 7months exp. I just got offered a job with an insurance company handling workers compensation, and medicare set asides, they are wiling to train and im making more than I was at the hospital with less stress, girl apply to diffrent positions that hold your interest, even if you dont qualify, stay with your current job while actively looking, and dont listen to negative people, I had people tell me I was job hopping and I need to sit still..I did what made me happy and now i can say, I feel blessed and proud of my accomplishments. Don't quit your job until you find another. The economy is horrible right now. Doesn't hurt to keep your eye open though. 1:9 is too much IMO.

Can you provide mor information on this career avenue? What company are you working for? How did you go about searching for such a career?

I used careerbuiler, monster, jobcircle and researched positions that had case management, coordinator, medical review..I have a cousin who work with an insurance company..if you go to blue cross, sedwick, aetna, unitedhealthgroup, they post position all the time i was lucky to get this job, it's a small company but there training will allow me to get a higher position with a larger company in the future..if your interested hartford life has positons open im not sure your location but its a good way to get your foot in the door if your looking for administrative positon RN/LPN..good luck...

Don't just change the job. We need to make the Nurse and Patient Ratio Law happen. If there is not Nurse and Patient Ratio Law, it is legal to assign you as many as the hospital administration want in any hospital of your State. Find out if your State Board or Nursing organization has the plan and movement. Join them and make the change. Or move to California because California is the only State in the United States has Nurse and Patient Ratio Law. However, the hospital might change their hiring method to go along with the law - Per Diem.

OP: if you're not happy, then definitely look for another job...however, considering this job market don't leave your current job until you find a new one or unless things get really bad there. Good luck.
