Ok, so the first week of nursing school has come and gone (we get Fridays off), and I'm actually still alive. LOL! Monday-Wednesday was all orientation stuff like how to use blackboard, student handbook, red rules etc.We also rec'vd our lab bags which have all kinds of goodies including foley cath, butterfly needle, gloves, mask, lab specimen kit, and some other things. Today was our actual first day of class, we had pharm and dosage calculations introductions. We learned about the Five rights, factors that affect medications, drug interactions, advers effects, side effects, legal aspects and a bunch of other important things about the nurse's role in administering medications. In dosage calc. we went over the five rights and 55 medication abbreviations that we have to know. One of the things that I think will be a challege is the fact that we are responsible for doing ALL of the reading BEFORE class. I had no problem with that this week because it wasn't a dizzying amount, but I'm sure it will be in the future. Another thing we did was start using meds-pub? Do any of you use this web program at your school? I like it, it's basically a nclex prep online that goes hand in hand with what were learning at school.Clinicals off campus start in October, until then we have skills lab at school practicing on dummies (which starts next Tuesday). We also have a peer-mentoring program in place, so I signed up to have and upper-classman mentor meWell, that was my week, it was exciting, scary, wonderful, and horrible all at the same time. I look forward to sharing more of my experience as we move along!

JoshuaC 76 Posts Aug 18, 2006 I start Monday the 21st. I'm so scared, please keep us posted! You're not the only one! I just want to get the first day over with. The only part I'm really nervous about is seeing my classmates for the first time and getting everything organized. I think when I'm comfortable in the classroom I'll be fine. I'm not really scared of the hard work that I'll be doing. Anything worth while takes hard work. Plus I want to learn, so I can't really wish for anything to be easy. But good luck to everyone starting.
