So today I received the assignments I need to complete for when school starts in 2 weeks. At first I thought this would be plenty of time- but then read the first chapter I need to read and got totally overwhelmed!! I know it will take time and studying to understand the material but I feel like my brain froze up and I experienced my first true pangs of anxiety since I got accepted in March.
I've never been much of a studyer and I have a few ways I plan to try and study outside of just reading the chapters. But after that first chapter, I don't even know where to begin! I want to take notes that I can add to in lecture but I tend to overwrite and such. I want to try flash cards but again, same problem. Any ideas? Thanks for letting me rant :)

Breathe!!!
What is the assignment?
So what if your notes are long, if they work for you, they work for you.
Try and not write complete sentences, just the meat of the subject.
Good luck
Haha thanks, breathing is important
And the assignment is just the reading itself, but I want to develop better studying and learning habits other than just reading the chapter. And once I read the chapter and saw the sheer volume of info, I kind of panicked.

I begin my first nursing class August 21, I haven't received a preassignment but I went to read ahead and I am on page 7 of Phamocology and I began to cry realizing that my 3.7 GPA and my A's in AP I and II and in Micro didn't mean squat.... I couldn't remember what a lipid was....so overwhelmed now ans scared out of my mind
Most chapters have a chapter review, that is like the meat and potatoes of the chapter.
Read that first, then read the chapter make sure you understand everything from the review.
It really helped me get through the fluff.
Thank you. I'm also going to look at my objectives list and make flash cards based on that. Also I decided to grab the study guide that goes with it.
Cmor,
You had better grades in AP than I did! But it's comforting knowing I'm not the only person who's freaking out. It makes me feel silly cause I know I'm smart enough to do this but part of me just doesn't know where to start.

I think a great way to learn and remember things is through gossip. Now I'm not much a gossiper but what I mean by that is to grab another classmate or someone with time and have them tell you facts you are to learn. Have a gossip session about the chapter. Related real life to the information, google a video. Record the info and have it play back in your car on you way to work or school (like how you can learn a song you never even looked up the lyrics to. Oh, flashcards are great too. I know I sound crazy but I do everything in the book and you'd be amazed at the random facts you retain like constantly playing Jeopardy.

When I study I like to highlight, then go back and take notes mostly on the highlighted stuff and I write my notes in an outline form, it makes it much easier to back and study them. It all depends on your learning style. This is what worked for me when I got my AAS and I maintained a 4.0 gpa. good luck!

Someone already said it.....BREATHE!
All the requirements that the programs make you go through is for a good reason......nursing is unlike anything you have ever done. The study guides are good. The reading right now is to familiarize you with where you are starting. I would read it a couple of times......to make the information familiar to your ears. The study guide is just that .....the recommended stuff you need to know. The information will seem over whelming but do not panic!!!
Deep, breath in........Let it out.......Good Luck!

My philosophy is, millions have done this and survived before me. I will too.
That doesn't mean I won't freak out occasionally, but it's not worth me stressing before school actually starts.
Thanks for all the support. I know it doesn't do much to get worked up before the program even starts, but I'm kind of a chronic worrier hahaha
I was just wondering though- when you are assigned a reading, what is your method to make it stick and understand it?
