Can someone tell me what can I do??? I have someone who was working under an interim permit, however she was always working alone and the interim stated that He/She are suppose to work with a certified RN for upto 300 Hours and she ended up giving someone .5ml of morphine to a patent. She got fired for this drug error. I heard many stories about people making even more severe drug error than this one. Now this person can't even write the RN exam unless this matter is solved and the union is suppose to sovle it and they will not even listen to us they want her to do the nurse refreser course. I think she should get to write the RN exam after all it is an exam and how she does on that exam will determine her ability as a nurse. So I wanna know what can she do and who can she talk to, to fix this problem. All she wants to do is write the RN exam Can someone please help her.

Sounds like he/she made the big mistake of working unsupervised. If is was an interim hire and supervision was a part of the employment then this person should have made demands that that supervision was supplied. If the facility wants to hang him/her out to dry they will probably get away with it. The horrible thing about nursing is they eat their young. I know you have heard this here before and to cetain extent it is true. This person should file a grievance or whatever she can and explain that supervision was not supplied and that the facility put him/her on the unit alone. That is if this is the case. If this person was supposed to work supervised it will be someones fault that he/she wasn't. I would think that as a studious practioner he/she would have double checked the dose with another person to protect themself.

Although that is unfortunate, it does not sound as if this person was fired without a cause as the title implies. If the person was to be supervised then yes, the facility should have supplied supervision however, there is the question of personal responsibility here. This person is obviously on the way to becoming an RN and that carries a huge amount of both responsibility and liability with it...I would wonder if the individual that went ahead and performed tasks that were out of her/ his scope would be ready to take that on. Nurses are held accountable and as an "almost" nurse that extends to the individual..hard lesson to learn though..Erin
She told her manager that she is not to work alone. and if they said its ok what was she suppose to do. there were only 2 nurses there at the time at this hospital with the towns population at about 4000-5000 and the other nurse was in the emergency ward. So who was she supose to ask. People say you made a big mistake to do that, how was she suppose to know what was gonna happen you can pridict the future.
Your right Erin but if you live in a place where there is a lot of hate and discrimination you would know whats up. there was a nurse here before who had all the supervision and long orientation. I totally think this was a racial issue just to get her out.

What do you mean you can't predict the future? If your lisence is conditional on having supervision and you accept working without supervision, you should know what could happen. She knew what she was doing was wrong and did it anyways. The hospital is also wrong, but that doesn't make this nurse right.

There was nothing in your original post about anyones race etc..so how was I to know? If it is a case of racial discrimination that is truly sad..and I feel for the individual however bottom line NONE of us can practice out of our scope..IF there was no one available to supervise I am not sure what he or she should have done..call the manager, call the CEO call someone..BUT he/she should not went out of the scope of practice..it will always come back to bite you but it is there for a reason, it defines our various roles, outlines our responsibilities and gives use boundaries within which to practice..I almost think that this individual walking off the job then reporting the hospital would have been a better thing to do??? I do legal nurse review for a large ins co here and if an RN or LPN goes outside their scope of practice and something adverse happens they are toast, period. I am still sorry that the incident happened to an up and coming nurse..Erin

Being in a small hospital with only 2 nurses is not a justifiable excuse. If there were 2 nurses on and one was in the ER where was the other one? I have worked in small hospitals in the same size town that nurse worked in. She could have walked over to the ER and had the dosage verified if the ER nurse was supposed to be supervising this person. More than once I walked over to the ER to have meds / dosages double checked. Where was her common sense? I don't think that this person was fired without just cause. The only person responsible for being hung out to dry is that person.
If they said it was OK, who is THEY? IF - whoever they is - told her to go do it then she was just following direction under her interim permit. Remember IF is the biggest work in the English language. Now don't hold your breath on anyone coming forward and admitting that she was told to go ahead and work alone.
Whatever fergus51 howmany times was she suppose to say it Besides I don't wanna hear from you anymore people like you make it hard for some just because your in.
