Finally did it!

Nursing Students Online Learning

Hey Everyone,

It's been a while since I have posted. I have been soooo busy. Anyway, I finally sent my application/review to EC, now the waiting begins. I am told that the process could take up to two months. My god, what do they do with the reviews anyway? Well, wish me luck. I am still studying A&P and I think I will start studying micro too.

Hi Spazzy Nurse,

Effective September 3, 2003, individuals relying on EMT certification as a means to earn admission to the Excelsior College School of Nursing must hold Paramedic level certification. Basic and Intermediate EMT certification will no longer meet the School of Nursing admission requirement

I took this directly from the EC site.

Hi mona b,

Now that's interesting because back in December when someone from the student nurse BB told me about the change I went to EC and the change was documented as "Jan 01, 2003".

So now you are saying it says September not January?

If that is true I am going to spit! I dropped that EMT class because of the EC change.

You have to read those posting carefully. Usually they have a posting date and an implimentation date. They very rarely make a change like that without giving advanced notice.

Hi

Actually, I called EC back in November when I was told about the change and that was after I went to the site and read the notice. When I called the Jan 2003 date was confirmed over the phone. So now if that is not really the date, what could anyone do?

Thanks for responding but I assure you I have been pursuing this career for a long time. I don't let anything get by me when it comes to school.

Hi Craig,

I went to the EC website to see if the date was changed but it is still in the catalog as Jan 01, 2003. If you go to the website, go to catalogs, nursing and look for the addendums.

I found out about the change in Early Nov 2002. The school is not bound by anything that says they cannot make changes to the admission policy as when they deem necessary. This is one of those changes. Unrealistic to be sure as they are still admitting respiratory therapist. Not certified x-ray techs, same amount of schooling, same AS degree. I find that incredibly odd.

At any rate, just wanted you to be clear on the date. It was Jan 2003.

I have found a school that Iam very happy with. I believe Excelsior has a good program. I have a friend who completed her nursing degree through Excelsior and was very happy. Of course that was nearly 14 years ago when the school was called Regents and the admission policy wasn't so odd and guess what, they even provided tutoring for the course work!

Good luck to all,

Opalm,

Good to hear from you. I know this EC thing is weird. I think they changed the requirements for the emt with 1000 hours of experience first, then they completely changed it to be effective that they do not even accept EMT anymore. Now you have to be a paramedic, I guess there is still some time for EMT's with 1000 hours to still apply but the change is coming. It definitely makes you wonder what is going on. Why would they accept a RT and not an EMT with experience?

On another note, you must be excited that you start Deaconess soon. I am still working on A&P, but like everyone else, I have been so busy that A&P has taken a back seat.

I'm sorry!!! You are right--- the EMT change took effect Jan. 2003. I was confusing it with the changes that'll take place regarding California and EC grads..... that one is Sept. 2003.

Sorry. Turd brain here.

Spazzynurse,

No need to appolgize at all. I was just getting all fired up because I thought if they really had indicated the change wasn't effective until the fall, I was gonna scream. monab can attest to the fact that I was standing on my head spitting wooden nickels trying to get in with the EMT cert (even though I already have lic in X-ray and ultrasound) EC wouldn't accept that but the EMT was ok, go figure.

So anyway, I am sticking with Deaconess at this point. Godd to see that this distance ed BB is providing info for all of us non-traditionals.

Catch you again soon,

C;)

I'm sorry to hear that they are changing the EMT policy. I graduated with a BSN and went in as an EMT. I think the program was very thorough. I've been an ICU float nurse for a couple of years & am now a Director of Nursing. I would have missed out because I couldn't afford to quit work to go to a traditional school. What a shame.

Good advice though, keep an watchful eye on this school for changes. It just seems to me some group must have come down hard on EC.

Yup- it's called the State of California :)

Katmease, EMT basics and intermediates can still get into the program, but now they need a certain number (1000 I think?) of supervised hours of experience. I don't think that's asking too much at all. There are people out there who got their 3 month EMT basic cert. for the sole purpose of entering the EC ADN program...... they had no intentions of ever working as one. I had my EMT-B and there is NO WAY that certification would have prepared me for the nursing field.

EMT-Bs have a whole range of different duties out there. Some transport people from nursing homes to Dr's appts...... while others do it all on their small town volunteer crew. I'm sure some Basics have had enough quality experience to be able to enter the nursing program, but certainly there are plenty who have not.

Well now I guess I'm wrong. I think.

I posted the long winded scoop on it's own post.

Mona what a great idea about the a&p thread. If only we could get enough people interrested we could help eachother stay focused and motivated. Lets at leaste try and see what happens Angelbear
