School nurses are discussing their experiences with accompanying students on field trips. Some nurses are required to go on all trips, while others only go if necessary. They often send medications and first aid supplies with teachers, and parents sometimes accompany students with specific medical needs.
I don't go along to any field trips. We have one diabetic student and his parent always goes along on his field trips. Anyone who needs meds, I package them and send along with the teachers to dispense. I also have first aid fanny packs that go along with them. Wish I could go...that'd be kinda fun to get out of the office!
So far I haven't had to cover any field trips. We do have one coming up that is still questionable about me going, hoping the parents will step up and take this one like they have the others. I haven't been on a school field trip since my own little ones where in elementary school, the youngest will be graduating college in Dec.
When I first started I went, now I am given the option. We have 2 kids who get ADHD meds and on field trips it drops to 1. I would rather have the day off than sit in a strategic location for hours doing nothing, as our trips are whole school that get broken down into small groups. Most venues have AED's and first aid kits, so the equipment is there, or I send them with teachers. Next year I may be getting a diabetic, so that may change.
I have a few diabetics and 1 student that needs to be cathed. I will attend the field trips if parents are unable to. All other kids that get scheduled daily meds - I just package the meds up and give to the teacher with instructions on when to administer.
If I don't attend - I send a backpack with a baggie of bandaids, gloves, gauze, bactine along with any student inhalers and EpiPens. Teachers are responsible for administration and first aid care.
Either I or a sub nurse has to go on all field trips that any non self directed kid that takes meds goes on. No one but a parent, their designee or a nurse may administer meds to theses students. I have about 30 meds a day ( about 20 of them are not self directed) and it gets complicated when some go on the trip but others don't., especially if a sub is not available....
I only have 1 diabetic student and his mom or dad go on all his trips. Awesome parents.
My ADHD kids either have a parent go, skip their med or have a teacher administer the med.
My teachers take an epipen for any student that has one prescribed. I also send a first-aid kit with any teacher that requests one..it has band-aids, Neosporin single-use packets, gauze, tape, sting relief pads, general first aid stuff. No meds.
For overnight trips, the parents sign med release forms allowing students to be given a short list of specific medications. For those, I have a larger "tackle box" of first aid supplies along with those meds, sanitary napkins and tampons, a flashlight, sunscreen, cough drops, you know, more extensive things. Also, epi pens and inhalers as well as rescue meds like diastat, Glucophage, and specific rx meds and send one staff member that is specifically trained (actually...for the diabetic meds, again, the parents are there).

How many of you school nurses are you required to go on field trips with the students?
What do you pack when you go?
Do you just go with kids who take medication?
