Feeling a little pressed for time.

Nursing Students NCLEX

Published

I would love some quick advice. I have known for several weeks that my NCLEX is this Saturday at 8am. I have kept my date private from my employer and most friends and family, only because I don't want a lot of "so...how did you do?" I just want to enjoy some quite time to reflect after the test. Okay with that said, I started my first nursing job 3 weeks ago. I am still on orientation and I am scheduled to work Wed, Thursday and Friday...what was I thinking?! My gut tells me that I should fess up with work and tell them that my boards are Sat. and I need to take the time to pull it together. The other side of me feels obligated to go and it may even keep my mind off of things. What would you all do? Do you think I'm nuts to work or am I over reacting? Thank you so much for your insight.

My answer would depend entirely on how much review and studying you've done???

I hear what you are saying. I guess I was thinking more for mental/stress prep. Good point though. If I feel like I've learned all I can, what will 3 days matter?

I am going to take the day before off just to relax. I am going to get up at 6am (to help ensure that I will fall asleep that night) and watch girly movies and maybe do some kind of exercise to relieve my stress and make me tired at night. Then I am going to have a nice dinner with my boyfreind when he gets home from work (if I can even eat anything at this point) and turn in early. I also happen to have the previous 2 days off b/c my preceptor is not working those days. I personally want that down time before the test, but it's up to the individual. Do what is best for you! I am working the day AFTER I take NCLEX to take my mind off the waiting. Those 12 hours normally fly by. I am going to walk out of there thinking I failed, regardless, so I might as well occupy my brain with something else. :trout:

Hi,

At the hospital that pre-hired me for an RN position, I had to tell them what my NCLEX date was because we can't start working until we pass the exam.

Just my opinion - I understand you not wanting to tell friends/family, etc., but the hospital that hired you for the Nursing position obviously wants you to pass the NCLEX so you can start working for them as an RN - so, I'd definitely tell them it's this Saturday and having a couple of days off beforehand would really help you be more prepared. Hope this helps... Sue

I think you've gotten some good opinions here, but I just wanted to wish you good luck, whatever you decide to do.

Is there a way that you can have an excuse for having that day off? I wouldn't want to tell people, either, because it is distracting...people asking you all day how you have done while you are a bundle of nerves...

But, I can agree, there really is nothing else that can be done three days before NCLEX. I'd just relax.

What I did was take three weeks off. I went to my old faithful physician and told him that I lifted heavy furniture, and hurt my back. And stayed home for those weeks to study for the exam. I didn't want to encounter my co-workers and their questions. But, the situation is different for you...you are on orientation, so, you have to be there. If you studied, you have taken in all that you can, so, that day, walk with your Creator and do your thing...which is become a nurse!

Thanks to everyone who took the time to help me with my goofy problem. I bucked up and went to work today (Wed). I marched into my Manager's office, confessed I had boards on Sat. and asked for the rest of the week off. She said "No problem, I wouldn't want to be working 2 days before my boards either!!" Granted, I have to make up the days next week, but if I pass boards, who cares! I guess it's true that you have to ask for what you want in this world. I feel like a huge weight has been lifted! I'll let you all know how I did. Pray for my success! Thanks again.

Sue
