Favorite nurse movie.

Nurses General Nursing

Published

We just recently disscussed favorite nurse books and I was wondering if there were any favorite nurse movies out there?

I saw and old black and white some years ago about two sisters in nursing school. They were caring for a little boy with a trach that needed suctioning (with their mouths!!) and the one sister left the boy alone to flirt with a doctor and the kid died, but the sister took the fall for it. Wish I could remember the name!:o

How about "Purple Hearts" with Ken Wahl and Cheryl Ladd.

I second Wit. The nurse character was very accurately portrayed.

the only nurse movie i remember is one flew over the cuckoo's nest..........and nurse Ratchet

did anyone ever see patricia neal in operation pacific with john wayne? the movie is not really about nurses it is about being in the navy in wwii. however, patricia neal's performance as a navy nurse and john wayne's ex wife is so powerful that as a child i thought it was a movie about nurses. the movie demonstrates the the respect our society had for nurses at the end of wwii very well. i still struggle to comprehend the sequence of events that led to the decline in status the nursing profession experienced during the last 20 years.

i totally agree with you about the respect those nurses received from the general public back then. :wink2:

Love Nurse Ratched in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest." Haven't seen many movies where nurses are portrayed seriously....

Nurse Ratched......my hero of course.

My favorite was MASH both movie and TV. Hoolahan really knew what she was doing!!!!

Well, off the top of my head, I have to say Meet the Parents. It's not specifically a nurse movie, of course, but I really like the fact that they not only showed nurses in a good (albeit comical) light, but that they showed male nurses in a good light. I was very impressed with the way that it was emphasized that Greg didn't go into nursing because he wasn't good enough to be a doctor, but that he chose nursing for the caring and patient contact.

While we're on the subject ...

There was an old movie about a soldier severly wounded in WWI. He was completely bandaged from head to toe, couldn't speak or see. All the movie is him in the bed trying to figure out if he's alive, dead, or asleep and it's done in his voice-overs with other characters occasionally coming in and working on him. It's been so long since I've seen it and I can't remember the title. Anyone? (It was also featured in a Metallica video back in the late-80s.)

I remember that movie because while most of the other characters treated this man like he was already dead, the charge nurse was making sure that he was cared for well, by opening his curtains to let in the light and by making sure he had enough pain meds. And by talking to him.

Matt,

The movie you jave in mind is an old black and white movie called Bang the drum slowly. It showed the nurse doing a tube feeding that really turned my stomach....but was a great movie

Dave

P.s. my favorite would have to be either the Triage nurse in Bringing out the dead or Greg Focher inMeet the parents

Dave-

Wasn't it Gaylord Focher?

Actually Dave, the movie that Matt is thinking of is "Johnny Got His Gun". It was an excellent book and the movie was very good at following the plot of the book. The movie "Bang The Drum Slowly" deals with a dying ball player and his close friend. It was much like the other movie "Brian's Song" that centered on two football players, one of whom was teminally ill.

CBS....

Damn you are right....I know it was that and for some reason iIwrote bang your drum...thanks for clarifing it for me. (mea culpa mea culpa mea culpa...hehe)... and in Meet the parents he went by Greg but his real name was Gaylord. That was why when the dad went to check for the Mcat tests he did not find anything he checked under Greg.....
