Favorite Mnemonics / Memory Tricks

Published

Hi there...I was thinking, as I was studying for NCLEX, how many mneumonics and other memory tricks we use. And I thought it would be good to have a thread where people could post what they use, and others could find them and use them. :)

I see there's a thread for acronyms, but I'm talking about mneumonics.

I'll start off :)

Immediate tx of MI, think MONA:

M Morphine sulfate

O Oxygen

N Nitroglycerin

A ASA

Treatment of CHF, think UNLOAD FAST:

U sit Upright

N Nitro

L Lasix

O Oxygen

A Aminophylline

D Digoxin

F Fluids- decrease

A Afterload - decrease

S Sodium - decrease

T Tests: dig level, ABG, K+

Assistive devices -- Canes:

C Cane

O Opposite

A Affected

L Leg

Keep adding! :)

And while we're on cranial nerves...if you need to remember which are sensory and which are motor (and which are both!), here's an easy way (also in order from 1-12):

"Some Say Marry Money But My Brother Says Big Brains Matter More"

Sensory

Sensory

Motor

Motor

Both

Motor

Both

Sensory

Both

Both

Motor

Motor

Then there are those who prefer to substitute "Brains" with "Boobs" or "Butts", lol....

for pain oldcart:

onset

location

duration

characteristics

aggrevating factors

relieving factors

treatment

i have another one for cranial nerves...something like "oh, oh, oh..." i'll need to look that one up and post later. if someone knows what i'm talking about and wants to post it, feel free...i don't know how long it could take me to fine it...lol.

oh oh oh to touch and feel a guys viagra ah heaven (my teachers taught my everthing i know lol)

Specializes in Peds Cardiology,Peds Neuro,Pedi ER,PICU, IV Jedi.
Signs of a Cholinergic Crisis, think SLUD:

S Salivation

L Lacrimation

U Urination

D Defication

Memory Trick:Need to remember which kind of beta blocker has which action?

B1 Blocks the heart (you have only one heart)

B2 Blocks the lungs (you have two lungs)

Have to add to the above post...cholinergic crisis...SLUDGE

SALIVATION

LACRIMATION (tearing)

URINATION

DEFECATION

GASTRIC UPSET

EMESIS

Just a little easier to remember...and I guarantee you're gonna see those last two...so be prepared!~!

You can also use this fun one for the same nerves: "Oh Once One Takes The Anatomy Final A Good Vacation Seems Heavenly":

i prefer this one. :blushkiss

You're right! Wasn't in my mneumonic, but it's important :)

oh oh oh to touch and feel a guys viagra ah heaven (my teachers taught my everthing i know lol)

this was one of the dirty ones i heard, lol.....well, it would be if you exchanged the g and v for something else :)

Still on nerves....

They can be confusing because they sound the SAME:

Sensory = Afferent

Motor = Efferent

Here's one for Parkinson's symptoms:

SMART:

Shuffling gait

Mask-like face

Akinesia

Rigidity

Tremor

Causes of Lethargy:

FATIGUED

Fat/ Food (poor diet)

Anemia

Tumor

Infection (HIV, endocarditis)

General joint or liver disease

Uremia

Endocrine (Addison's, myxedema)

Diabetes/ Depression/ Drugs

For sickle cell anemia think HHOP

Hydration

Heat

Oxygen

Pain relieve

Just remembered another one:

These are emergency drugs you can LEAN on -

L Lidocaine

E Epi

A Atropine

N Narcan

Moderators, can we stick this near the top so it doesn't get lost?
