Fall 2011 Western University of Health Sciences MSN-E

Published

Anyone applying to WesternU's MSN-E program? If so, do you know when they will start the interview process? What they look for in their applicants (gpa, extracurricular, etc)?

Current students--What were your stats like?

Any information would be helpful =)

Thanks in advance!

Hi all,

I have a couple of questions, particularly for those who have already been interviewed...

First question: I've been rolling the numbers in re to tuition; am I correct that the program will cost over 200k, or have I completely misunderstood how everything is calculated?

And second question: for those who have had interviews, did you pose the question about meeting the possible 2015 FNP/DNP deadline? When I asked my counselor she had not heard of the ruling, so she wasn't able to provide anything more than what I had read. I was wondering if the interviewing committee had any additional information about that for new students and what it means for us as (potential) students graduating in 2014/15.

Thanks!!

I asked about the 2015 DNP deadline and she said "just worry about getting into a msn program first....the law hasn't passed yet for the DNP degree" I was kind of disappointed at this answer but yeah.. :-(

The funny thing is that most people dont even know of Western University. Everyone seems to know the CSU's much better than the private schools. I just wish Western didnt cost an arm and a leg. Almost 200,000 in debt. eeeeeeek .

She is technically correct about that. The law hasn't passed and no measures have been taken to enforce the changes nationally yet. I know Rush has added an extra 6 months to the FNP program to make it a DNP program. This way the deadline and any laws are irrelevant. I'm sure that Western will make similar changes. Also, don't forget that the 4-8 semesters include summer so I think the program including the MSN portion which is listed as 12-16months long plus 2-2.5 years would be a little less than 3.5 years. which would most likely put us just under the deadline in 2014. Also, depending on the track and how must more class time you put in over working you can get it done quicker, it seems that way at least given the range.

Thanks for the answers, everyone!

I was thinking the same, that perhaps they could add additional clinical hours and some additional months to make the DNP requirements. That actually would be pretty awesome, IMHO.

I'm interviewing with the last batch, Feb 18, in the afternoon (yes, I actually chose this date/time as it was what worked best... I asked if it would be a disadvantage to select the late date and was told no, so, here's hoping!).

Congrats and good luck, everyone!

:)

Thanks again!

i actually met with a nursing adviser from admissions today at APU and asked her about the new DNP requirement. she said that although the ANA has mandated it for 2014, it most likely won't go into effect for 30 years because it is impossible to make all advanced practice nurses get their DNP. it would just be too challenging to implement it into the system for those already practicing. hmm, it probably wouldn't hurt to get it though just in case! ;)

thanks for the info maxpower. we are pretty much in the same boat! i am also applying to the CSUs and UCLA, along with a couple others. i've been doing my research as well. looks like we have about two weeks to do our homework and make a decision! :)

I know for a fact that she was wrong to tell you that. I know of several programs that have drastically changed their cirriculum in anticipation of this law being passed. Also, i know that several medial schools are no longer offering GP as a specialty to entering classes, the DNP is designed to replace this giving more rights to FNP/NPs. After doing a lot of research on my own, i have found that 5 years is a realistic transition period to start with complete implementation by 2020. whoever told you 30 years hasn't really done much research on the matter or heard incorrectly.

I was just at the info session at Western last night, and the question about the switch to DNP came up. One of the professors who was leading the discussion (who is also part of the admissions committee) said that Western already has a plan in place to switch existing students to DNP if the law passes. Don't worry guys, the school is on it!

As an aside, after going to the info session, touring the campus, speaking directly with students and professors at the school, I am even more convinced that Western is the school for me. They are so personable, provide one on one support, and have state-of-the art facilities. Seriously, I can't wait to apply next year.

thanks for the info ilnurse. that's good to know. either way, i'm glad that most schools are deciding to change their curriculum to prepare us.

since people recieved their early acceptance letters on the 5th, i wonder if that means that the rest of us will recieve confirmation 2 weeks later, such as the 19th. im dying to find out and im sooooo anxious. This is going to be tuff on us if we get rejected.

I think that letters or calls will go out the week of the 21st or 28th considering interviews are still going on. I thought that they said they were going to do all the interviews and then let people know either way.

Yeah! I received a phone call yesterday for an interview on Tuesday the 15th at 12:45pm. Anyone else coming in on that day or time? It was a really short notice but luckily I live near by.

Good Luck everyone on their interviews.

Socal.

i heard that the 15th might be the last day of interviews, and if not, then they might add one more day around the 25th-ish
