Fall 2017:UT Health Science Center Houston

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hi all!

Thought I would start a thread for the fall semester! Anyone who wants to share their stats or anything about the application process can post them here! My stats as of now...

Pre-nursing GPA: 3.54

Science GPA: 3.67

HESI: 87.7

Pretty worried that my stats aren't good enough. Scored low on the A&P section of the HESI (80%) but made an A in the class...hoping maybe that will help even it out? I get discourage when I read through the other threads and see people get rejected with 4.0 GPA's and 90s on the HESI. :( I do have 80 volunteering hours at a children's hospital but I doubt that would help me enough.

Hey guys. Got my denial email today.

I was waitlisted last application period and denied the next. I don't know how they choose their students , but congrats to everyone !

@ldickerson Way to go on your TEAS!!! [Can I ask what prep book(s) you used to study for it, if any?] Your stats are awesome, too. Yeah, there's def no telling how they come to their decisions. Good luck for spring!

nrvhy, I started with the ATI TEAS VI Study Guide that you can buy on their site but the Science part was a little lacking. I then ended up buying "ATI TEAS SECRETS" study guide from Barnes and Noble and that one was amazing. It's basically an in-depth review of everything in the other one. THEN, I went to the ATI website and got the two practice tests that you can do online. There are 2, a Test A and Test B that allow you to take each twice - but the nice thing is is that the format is exactly like it was on the TEAS AND it tells you what you're getting right and wrong at the time you answer so the answers will stick with you. Once you have completed the test you are provided a list of everything you had trouble with on the test so that you can go back to the study guide and review it. Both of the study guides listed have practice exams in the back of them, as well. Also, with the practice tests, the English portion is TOUGH. I was VERY worried that I wasn't going to do well, maybe not even pass that section, because of the practice tests. It's important to go over everything you miss on those portions, however, the actual TEAS English section was MUCH more straightforward. I think that's it for the TEAS. I started studying last Thursday and took my test today (Wednesday) so 6 days of studying worked really well for me.

I hope that helps! Good luck and let me know how you do!

@ldickerson Such helpful information! Thank you so much!! That TEAS SECRETS one is actually sitting in my Amazon cart right now! Totally rooting for you for the next round! ;)

@pappa22v Thank you for your encouraging words! I keep reminding myself that I can't be too upset this time since it's my first time applying ever, and UTH is the only school I was able to apply to. I'll be applying to two additional schools (that also require the TEAS) next round. Congrats and all the best at TWU - I've heard their nursing program is really great!

Denied!!!!!!!!! Didn't receive an email , just checked online. So disappointed. Applied three times, denied, waitlisted than denied. I'm very upset

Sarah, what are your stats? I wonder if we all have something in common. Did you ever apply outside of UTHSC or no? I'm sorry you didn't get in, 3 attempts not coming to fruition would make me really upset, too.

So sorry.. Three times can be a bummer and of course not knowing what exactly were doing wrong . But you sharing your experience gives us all an idea either we get chosen or not 😑 keep your head up

I'll try to make this short and I'm not trying to upset anyone, but everyone keeps wanting each other's stats. I've been at this for nearly 2 years and have received 6 denials so far which include two from UTHealth. By looking at other people's stats all you're doing is stressing yourself more than need be. Most schools it's beneficial to see others stats, but I promise it doesn't make a difference with UTHealth. They have minimum requirements and as long as you meet them you have a chance. They accept a wide range of students and there is no discernable pattern that you will discover based on the small sample of applicants we have here.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, don't stress about other's stats or even your own(assuming you meet their minimum requirements).

Ldickerson... If you don't mind me asking how much chemistry and biology science was on the science portion of the TEAS or was it all A&P?

I'm not Ldickerson, but can tell you it was a little but of everything. Basic anatomy to balancing chemical equations.

And that was TEAS 6 correct?

And that was TEAS 6 correct?

Yes...I've taken both the old and newer version.

Awesome thanks for the reply on it!
