Fall 2017:UT Health Science Center Houston

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hi all!

Thought I would start a thread for the fall semester! Anyone who wants to share their stats or anything about the application process can post them here! My stats as of now...

Pre-nursing GPA: 3.54

Science GPA: 3.67

HESI: 87.7

Pretty worried that my stats aren't good enough. Scored low on the A&P section of the HESI (80%) but made an A in the class...hoping maybe that will help even it out? I get discourage when I read through the other threads and see people get rejected with 4.0 GPA's and 90s on the HESI. :( I do have 80 volunteering hours at a children's hospital but I doubt that would help me enough.

You're right, Brandon. For me, I think that being able to see that others' stats are all over the spectrum whether waitlisted, accepted, or denied kind of helps solidify the fact that everything is random, and that actually makes me feel a lot better about it - as weird as it may sound. But you make a good point - none of it matters.

Carmona, it focused MAINLY on A&P, but a small portion of it was focused on scientific reasoning (know the steps), chemical equations and the types (decomp, redox, etc), triple-balance-beam and how to read it and why it's used (which I've actually never learned...), definitely know organelles and their functions, know genes vs genotype vs phenotype and punnett squares and Mendelian genetics. If you do the practice tests on the ati test, they very much cover almost everything on the test. The practice tests in the books go over anything they may have missed. I pretty much just read all of the science practice questions everywhere and that really helped me prepare for that portion.

Also! If you google "TEAS 6 Advice (Questions Welcome)" on allnurses, someone has put up a great list of what to study. That helped me a lot, too!

Thank you both for the info. Shooting for that 97!

Hey y'all, new to the forum but I've been reading since the beginning. I was also waitlisted and I'm just wondering if anybody has heard anything back?

Can those that have been waitlisted share their stats please

Hello everyone,

I officially just got denied at 5:30 pm. My overall undergraduate GPA is a 3.9, my nursing prerequisite GPA is a 3.8 and my prerequisite science GPA is a 3.6.

My HESI overall was a 95 and I also have a Bachelor of Science in Health from Texas A&M. I'm honestly so shocked and in disbelief.

Congrats to everyone that got accepted!

Your stats are amazing and that just shows us how they are not selecting students based on grades. It really does look like they use a lottery selection which is really unfair.

I also got my denial at 5:30, it seems they send out those denials the same time every time . I received my My last two denials at 5:30. Seems like an automated email is sent out to everyone that didn't get in at once

This may sound crazy, but I can't help but wonder if having a previous degree does absolutely nothing because I have seen some people with incredible stats, better than mine and they did not get in and I did. I just keep noticing it come up that people with nearly perfect scores and a precious degree get denied. But I also agree with Brandon, it definitely seems more random than just grades but there has to be more to it. I cannot imagine a school would just pick names out of a hat. But anyways, I wish the best of luck to everyone and look forward to meeting some of you this semester.

In regards to seemingly randomness, I appreciated the story about the one candidate that got waitlisted one semester and then denied the next.

Hi everyone I recently got admitted to UT health. I currently live in Dallas so I am looking for housing for the time being in school if anyone needs a roommate or would like a roommate feel free to email me at [email protected]

Wow, this is pretty insane. It's hard to believe that someone with these stats would get denied and people whose stats aren't nearly as impressive get in (not to take away from anyone who did get in at all). Thats good news for any of us with lower stats but discouraging for people who have higher ones. I mean, has anyone ever thought about any other aspects of the application? Like, people who may of worked full-time while going to school? Or something else? I don't know. It more than likely is a lottery system. That would make sense. You have all these people that either slightly exceed or significantly exceed the requirements which would mean we are all qualified and deserving of getting into the program. If you look at the time frame that people started seeing a change in their status (like the yellow triangle to green circle) to the time we started receiving acceptances, waitlists and denials you would notice it all happened really quickly. Maybe that's some indication on how they make their admissions decisions. Anyway, moving forward to next semester. Good luck to everyone applying for Spring 2018. At least we know what to expect (or not expect) next time. :p
