Fall 2011, what's your schedule?

Published

Hi, I'm starting my ADN nursing program in a few weeks. My 1st semester (of five semester program) will be:

Fundamentals of nursing (6 credit hours)

Fundamentals of nursing clinical ( 1 day/week)

fundamentals of nursing lab (1 day/week; 2 days a week the first few weeks until we start clinicals)

Health Assessment (counts as 1 credit hour but is scheduled for 3)

Pharmacology ( also counts as 1 credit but is scheduled 3)

I'm excited to see how it will all work. I wrote down what I think my schedule will look like and I was able to find about 23 hours a week to study. I hope that will be enough! My schedule is officially only 9 hrs total but we were advised against working, especially full time, and have most or all of our "co-reqs" done. ( I have all of them out of the way). I don't work but I am a mom of 2 which keeps me pretty busy. I've also been "couponing" for a while now, and I would like to have 3-5 hours to spend on that but I didn't see where I could squeeze it in...we'll see.

How about everyone else? What will your first semester look like?

i absolutely love the way our school sets up classes because if you really hate the subject or teacher that you are studying you only have to focus on it for a month and then you move on. the new fall 2011 cohort will have 7 week classes but they won't get the 2-3 day "break" between classes. the downside is we have two test and a final with no extra credit each five weeks, so if you fail a test horribly you have almost no chance of passing the class, but you can always repeat it the next five weeks. also the set up allows you to focus solely on one concentration at a time, unlike some programs where you have 2-3 test in a week all on different subjects. another possible downside is that our school graduates anywhere form 15-30 students every five weeks because they have 7 start times a year with each cohort starting out with 40 students, most not making it through the first year for various reasons. this makes for a really tight job market in my area due to about 7 adn/bsn programs in a 150 mile radius, the highest concentration in the state. but there are a lot of hospitals in the area so it isn't so bad and the non-metropolitan areas are always hiring so you wouldn't necessarily have to move out of state just out of the area. my cohort started september 2010 with 38 students, now only 12 remain of the original class with 14 that we have picked up along the way, making it a total of 26 students that just finished up our med/surg i class this past wednesday, we are due to graduate september 2012. i am also able to work 3rd shift at the hospital part-time (24hrs a week, 8hr shifts) and still have time to pick up my 5 year old from school most days.

yay, just found out i passed med surg so i can actually post this-

Mother Baby-- schedule kinda varies but it looks like mostly class 8-12 t,th,f with either a skills lab or clinical mondays and wednesdays (it is different every week.. one clinical a week from 6a-5p, and usually an 8 hour skills lab)

this is totally different from my structured 630-1500 m,w clinical every week with class 8-12 the rest of the days. im going to actually have to check my calendar this semester.. we even change lecture rooms periodically. :uhoh3:

Well, well, well... nursing school starts back up at the end of August and I don't know if I should cry :crying2:

or laugh:lol2:. Don't get me wrong, I'm very thankful I was able to make it through my last two semesters, however, I feel drained and worn out.. My classes are changing due to my Junior status, which, makes me scared a little. If there's anyone out there that goes to Capital Community College and can give me some incite on the hours as far as clinicals go I would greatly appreicate it. From what I've been told my schedule is suppose to be every Monday & Friday 9:00am to 11:00am with clinicals Tuesday and Wednesday.

Wonder why such a huge difference in hours? Our adn has 12 units a semester assuming u have finished all ge requirements. On Monday I am in back to back class from 7:30 am to 4 pm with 1 hr for lunch. Tuesday half day, wednesday half day, Thursday long day of lecture, Friday half day. It just seems like a lot. I am going to count the hours in the morning.

Fall of 2011 I will be in my second to last semester. My schedule looks like this:

Community Health class (Monday 0800-0950)

Mental Health class (Monday 1000-1150)

Pediatric clinical (Tuesday 0645-1515)

Mental Health clinical (Wednesday 0800-1430)

Community clinical (Thursday 0645-1515)

Pediatrics class (Friday 1200-1350)

I've been waiting for this semester because it seemed like it would never come when I first started nursing school back in the August 2009. What I need to do right now is study for finals, which are next week, so I can pass the classes I took this summer and actually make it to next semester! These finals include ICU, OB, and Research. Ayaiyai!

I begin nursing school (ASN) program in August as well. I do work full time as a CNA II but since the hospital is footing half the bill for nursing school and I don't want to be saddled with large loans after NCLEX, I will continue to work. I am blessed with a wonderful support system (husband of 20 years and a almost 13 year old daughter). I was fortunate to have accomodations made for me at work and a schedule that permits studying.
