Failure rate of nursing schools.

Published

What is the failure rate of your nursing school? We were told that most were 50%! With ours it's been at least that.

40% pass rate for the program and 100% pass rate for NCLEX...I thought that was unusual but apparently it's pretty typical!

We started with 120...1st & 2nd semester we lost an average of 5 people, 3rd semester 30 people failed (including me)...I hear around 50-60 people graduate each semester

Purple: We have a few instructors that absolutely won't answer questions. I don't know if they just don't know the answers, or just don't want to. The tests are not a test to see what we know, but a test to see if the instructors can fool us. They are NOT similar to the NCLEX. Sometimes the instructors tell us not to worry about a section, and then the test will concentrate on that section! We have a new instructor for this 8 weeks, and he actually teaches! It sounds like his tests will be more of what is expected of us to learn, and not a bunch of trick questions. We'll see this week!

U must go to my school..U sound exactly like me

It amazes me that these schools actually want to flunk out students in order to have a higher rate on the NCLEX. We actually figured this scheme out closer to the end of second semester. I wonder if they ever considered just teaching us what we need to know! Evidently if we were admitted we are smart enough and ready to take on whatever they give us, but we need guidance. I have never seen a program with policies as strict as these nursing programs. On another note, they actually make even more money because once you are dismissed they make u start ALL over so u r forced to pay for more classes. I knew a girl that had to wait a whole year to retake one class because she got a 79% on one of her exams and they required an 80%. I know the schools aren't to blame for everyone's failures, but they are lacking alot of guidance and direction in these programs. You would think bc ppls lives are @ stake they would make sure we knew all we needed to in order to keep someone alive. I am sorry to go on a rampage here, but I am sick of teaching myself this information, if I were the expert I wouldnt have gone to nursing school.

40% pass rate for the program and 100% pass rate for NCLEX...I thought that was unusual but apparently it's pretty typical!

Same for the school that I attend which is a private BSN program. Started off with 35 students now we are down to 17 with 93 days left until graduation. Pass rate for the NCLEX was 100%. The program I belong to is rigerous, the instructors have it "together" only had one HORRIBLE insturctor and she is no longer employed at the school. 3 consecutive semesters of unsatisfactory staff evaluations from students and they will ask the instructor to "resign" All of the instructors have doctorate degrees. I don't really focus on how many fail the program...If you are failing the program your not cut out to be a nurse. You get 2 attempts at the class that you fail and 4 times to fail a class (76% in our program is failing) and you will not be permitted to continue in the program. I am 100% confident in the education that I am receiving from my school.

I Wish I attended ur University, the 1st thing I noticed when I went to class was none of my professors were Dr. so & so... None of them have doctoral degrees. No questions are answered during class, I have heard "I don't know" so many times my head is spinning (what o u know?). In patho I hear I don;t know that word so we will skip it. I decided to passed on one of the best universities in my state because this program started a semester earlier, I wish I had waited because I honestly feel like I am going to need to study 5X's as hard to pass the NCLEX. After all the ppl they dismiss they still only have a 75% success rate on the NCLEX. I took my pre-reqs @ a community college & my education was by far much better than this universities, & majority of those professors did have doctoral degrees, & not to mention I wasn't paying nearly as much as I am now.

I believe the instructors at my college have masters degrees, or are working on their masters. You would think they'd have to have doctoral degrees. OK, I can understand them wanting a large percentage to pass the NCLEX. Then why don't they teach what we need to know, instead of expecting us to learn it on our own, or trying to trick us? After all, the costs of nursing college is NOT cheap! Wouldn't it look better if they had less of a failure rate WITH a large percentage passing the NCLEX? There would be a greater amount of people applying for the college!

for those attending colleges with the "wont" teach and "i dont know" teachers, report them to the BOS of your state.

Purple Rn; do you mind sharing which school you are attending

We have a 50% drop out rate in first year, apparently. I was surprised but then, not really surprised. I think that there are a lot of people that don't realise what is expected or nurses until they actually get to clinical at the end of first semester.

holy crap:eek:

every profession has a "weeding out" system, I use to be pre-pharm and the big weed out classes were organic chem 1 & 2..I don't have a problem with that, the problem that I have is when instructors & clinical instructors are weeding out people less than 6-8 wks from graduation..this is down right cruel in my opinion!
