I had a nursing instructor that only wanted young female students. I was an older female student. This instructor tried to say I gave a diabetic patient orange juice & wanted to kick me out of the program. I reminded her that SHE gave me the fluid (water) to give to the patient. I passed nursing school & got my RN license. I found out she was a NP where my PCP was. I had it put in my records that she was NEVER to treat me because she's dishonest. Also, she is never to see my records.

We give SL Ativan & Morphine Sulfate to those dying all the time. They are usually to the point that they cannot swallow medications. I've never had one aspirate yet.

I've worked at 2 places where the nurses have done that. They tattle to make themselves look better. But, when it's done to them they are very defensive & then go for blood. It's like high school all over again!

There isn't a nursing shortage, but a shortage of how many places hire ENOUGH nurses. A new nurse will probably have trouble finding a job now.

I know the feeling! Shortly after graduation--before I even took the NCLEX--Joplin, MO was devastated by tornadoes. My daughter is a Paramedic. She called the Red Cross to see if they could use us & they said "we definitely can!" My daughter & I ended up at the Southern State University where the make-shift hospital was. We were the ONLY ones on that wing. We took care of 4 patients that had been buried under a building. They all had seen a dr. or NP but were still all cut up & dirty. We had no running water & unreliable electricity from a generator. All around Joplin looked like a war zone. It's an experience I'll never forget.

I work at a Long-Term Facility. We were told that if the person is a Full Code, even if they are "stiff as a board", we are required to do CPR until EMS arrives. We can call someone that is a DNR as deceased, but not one that is a Full Code. Does that make sense? We were told it's to so we won't get sued by family members. There should be a written law that if someone has rigor mortis, no CPR has to be done, no matter what the code status.

The state stayed an extra day "because we couldn't find anything, yet".

I totally agree with you! We've had more falls due to residents being able to un-velcro those stupid lap buddies & fall before we can get to them. Seat belts that can't be unfastened for dementia residents would stop many of our falls.

I look forward to a time when I can either retire, or find a job outside of LTC. I've never worked with such a rude, back-stabbing bunch of people in my life.

Just tell them the complete truth. As a mother that watched her infant die from a life-threatening illness, I can tell you that they want to know EVERYTHING no matter how devastating.

We have 1 pill slicer for about 25 people. We've never had a problem with residue being an issue. I think this is just another example of someone sitting at a desk trying to come up with ideas to complicate a nurse's job.

The elderly resident's SON was drugging her & having sex with her. She was confused & didn't know any better. For some reason, they let him take her back home to live.

Some of the excuses I got: 1. "I have a hangover." (At least they were honest.) 2. "My sister is in the hospital" Me: "for what?" Them: "I don't know." Supposedly this employee went to the hospital, still had no idea what sis was in the hospital for. He had on Facebook what a great time he had late at night drinking. I made him come in. 3. "My mom is in the hospital dying from cancer." I found out later that mom had cancer, but was fine. 4. "My cousin is in the hospital." Me: "that is not a close enough relative." I found out later that she only met this cousin once. 5. "My dog is having puppies." 6. "My brother was in a bad accident." I found out later it was a total lie.

Working in LTC, we are all dressing up on my shift. The residents get such a kick out of it! One stipulation. I told staff they just can't dress up as the Grim Reaper, LOL. The Aides are considering dressing up as Duck Dynasty members. Many residents watch Duck Dynasty!

I work in a LTC facility. Pluses: you can usually get more hours than in a hospital, & you get to know all of the residents. You can get pretty close to some of the residents. Minuses: some of these residents or family members can be really obnoxious & you can get pretty tired of them. CNAs have a big turnover (who'd want to work in crap FOR crap?) You work your butt off! I'm exhausted after every shift. You see a LOT of death & dying. I don't have any idea how many dead people I've seen. The doctor doesn't appear to care about the residents. He works at a hospital & visits all the area nursing homes once every 2 weeks. He hates it when we call him about anything! BUT, my future daughter-in-law works at a hospital & has many problems there, too. In LTC you are the ONLY "family" member for many of these people.
