Got an email saying that we are encouraged to have our MSN by 2017
Yes I am sorry I was vague. I work on a m/s unit in Arizona. It did say "encouraged". I would copy the email, but being as how big this website is lol, I am sure it could bite me griping about it. I am thinking it is an incentive so to speak, but I do know that they are NOT actively choosing ADNs to hire on, and the ones on the unit are grandfathered in and are more than encouraged to get their BSN. I have been told that it is mandatory. Also I was being a smart*** when I said "what's next? NP,MD? I meant do they want to just get rid of us RNs all together and have a bunch of advanced practice nurses at the bedside. While it is not mandatory, it seems from the past experience that the word "Encouraged" often turns into... You better get your butt in gear if you like your paycheck.

Anyone else got this bomb dropped on you?? Partial tuition reimbursement will be given. I thought that getting a BSN would keep them happy. When will it be encouraged that we are all NPs or PAs or MDs?

Nurses dressing up for Halloween
Our company has sent a memo allowing us to dress up for Halloween and is even making a contest of it. Several nurses are really disgusted with the idea saying it is completely unprofessional. I've never dressed up for work, but I don't really care if others do. What is your view on the issue?

How much do you make
Since this is "anonymous" and all. I am not getting this BSN thing. You pay through the nose to get a degree and RNs here with a BSN make no more than the ADN degrees ($25/hr). I can go on and get a MSN and they don't make any more either as I have several friends who are in management positions who do not make much more than me and the only benefit is the M-F 8-4 gig, but I could do that in Home Health or Hospice. Is it the area? Where are these nurses making $40 an hour that you "hear about"?

Couldn't believe he did this...
"My turn to be condescending with all due respect. Not for nothing, but this is evidence based rationale. Exercise decreases serum glucose and adequate hydration helps optimize pancreatic function and performance of endogenous insulin. The fact that you apparently didn't understand this speaks to my earlier comment that most nurses know almost nothing about the pharmacokinetics and dynamics inherent to diabetes care. smh" Wow... and I will be condescending to you and your "highly educated" self, while I am asking granny with the 350 blood sugar to just get on up and do some exercise and have you a glass of water while you are at it granny, never mind your dizziness and confusion that goes along with hyperglycemia, the book says running you around and forcing H20 will bring it on down.... That will go over well. Have you gotten so educated and that you don't remember real life isn't always "evidence based"?

Is nursing killing me :/?
Graduated 2 years ago, I am an "older nurse" lol at age 32. I have been working on a busy M/S unit since I graduated. I try to stay active when not at work, although my work should count as 10 days worth of cardio. Started getting strange palpitations about 6 months ago. I drink a lot of coffee, so I figure caffeine and go on about my busy life and they got worse, so I made an appt. with the cardiologist who put me on an event monitor for 2 weeks, and I still haven't heard about that, but he had me do a stress echo and during the exam the girl had the monitor where I couldn't see it and she kept saying "are you okay? Are you having chest pains? lol... I say "Should I be???" lol. She says, you sure are throwing off a LOT of PVCs.... Errrrr. Figures. Then she says (and forgive me but I am pretty sure this is the last thing a health care professional should ever do) well usually we don't see PVCs during the stress test unless there is a blockage somewhere but he will let you know when he sees you in two weeks. WTH girl?? I was annoyed but went on my way.... Shift nurses, how is your health? What do you do to stay healthy? Do you lay off the caffeine? I am stressed as we all are but at my age, and my wnl bp, the last thing I was expecting at my age is issues with the ticker.
