Sounds like you need to create different study habits because apparently your current ones aren't getting you up to speed on the material. Research different study habits and try them out, also try to find out what kind of learner you are by doing a google search for tests that can tell you that.

How are you studying now?

Try getting as much face time with the models as you can.

Buy flash cards, I have ones by Netter that are great.

Get not just one but multiple atlases, one never has everything.

Get a study partner

Continuously go over the material.

If you constantly go over the material your brain will figure out that this is info you want stored into your long term memory. When you first learn it it goes in your short term, and will stay there until you continuously review.

I think you should contact your campus tutoring center asap and ask to talk with a tutor. S/he can show you some effective study techniques that will make all the difference in your test performance.

i agree with the above poster. it's gotta be your study habits. are you having a hard time understanding the info? or with the amount of info? once you realize what's giving you the most trouble, you should go into a direction of studying that will provide better results for yourself. a&p takes a lot of extra time, in order to do well you have to give it a fair shot.

what aren't you grasping ?

be a little bit more specific and i will recomend you reading the thread A&P summer 2008 since we have shared plenty of great study tips! and great websites for assistance

if you need any further help let me know!

i study alot do flash cards and everything it's just when i test i go blank and get everything jumbled i honestly think i over study.

i use the website and do the quizzes and get 80's and up so i just don't get what i'm doing wrong. i have a bad professor too. he doesn't give study guides at all in his words "they aren't necessary" so he doesn't do them. this makes it harder to study for me without a study guide.

i have missed two labs due to my kids being sick but i tried to keep upwith the material so i would not get behind. well i thought i was doing good in lab so it would balance out? iwas wrong.

i just don't want to keep going like this i studied 2 hrs tonight already and i am still not even halfway finished with one chapter i'm just so frustrated!!!! :banghead:

flash cards are not always good!!! they actually mess me up big time!!!!

what words for me is to summarize and write everything that i must know then i read it, then i type it all up in the computer, and read it again!

and you should try a voice recorder they can help you... meybe you are not a visual learner, and maybe the familiar sound of his voice will wake your brain up and not leave you blank during test hours!

are you taking to many other classes right now? sounds like you didn't get a very good professor either. at this point in the semester, since you seem to be overwhelmed with it, maybe you should withdraw or drop (if it's still an option). some people may not agree with this suggestion but you really want to do well in your sciences and an "f" will hurt your overall gpa.

look into the other professors at your school. ask other students who they recommend. you can do this. it just may be the wrong situation for you right now.

check out this website. there is a student nurse who posted how she studies for her exams and passes them with a’s. i use the same techniques and it does work!

also, make sure you read your syllabus. often times professors will indicate the total percentage of your lab work that will be allocated for your final grade. this is useful information in planning for your success in the course.

i would schedule a time to meet with the professor. discuss with him/her about your final grade. professors are human too. they sometimes make mistakes in recording grades, so be prepared for your meeting by taking all of your assignment with you in the event there is a mistake. use the time you have with the instructor to get feedback as to what can be done to raise your grade. is extra credit an option? you mentioned you prefer study guides, but your professor mentioned they are a waste of time. find out why the comment was made. he may clue you in on how he doesn’t use them when creating a test (so in this sense, it would be a waste of time). but, if you best study with study guides, go to the your a&p publisher’s website. a lot of publishers offer several different material to help prepare for the exam. if you can’t find anything, your instructor has access to extra material. ask him/her if perhaps he/she can print off the material for you. i had one professor who gave me his user and pass for the website because he didn’t use it. i found a lot of really good material to help study. in other words, max out all of your resources! i was thinking too. check to see if you can find an a&p text that is solely written for the high school level. look over the material in that book and compare it with your college text. i have heard that method works quite well!

the other thing is…you are at midterm, not the final! you still have time to turn this around. make a plan for the rest of your semester and crank it out. i know it is difficult to swallow, but instructors give midterm grades for a reason; so that you can readjust if needed in order to be successful in the course.

good luck to you!

My A&P teacher doesn't give study guides either. He said, the best study guide that you can use is the book. So that left me a bit overwhelmed. I noticed that his powerpoint is straight from the book, so I started taking the chapter notes BEFORE I go to lecture. I then just highlight what he says in class on my notes and add the few things that I missed. This gives me more of an opportunity to listen to what he says rather than scrambling to take notes.

I also have people that I have met in my other classes who have the other A&P professors at my school. I get copies of their study guides and practice tests and they are truly helpful. They may not be exactly what my professor is looking for, but it gives me a little focus. We take departmental Midterms and Finals so I know that overall we all have to know the same information.

I also utilize all of the online study material on the book website and take all of the practice tests several times. When I take the tests I make sure I understand why I got the question wrong. I keep taking the tests till I miss less than 2-3.

So far I only missed 2 on the first 4 chapter test and am pretty sure less than that on the second (we just took the test on Wed.). We have our bone test on Monday and I am feeling very confident. A&P takes priority over all of my other classes because I know that it is the foundation of the nursing.

It can be done. I know it takes a lot of time especially with a family and other responsibilities, but it is worth it.

What I do (especially with the diagrams) is without looking at my notes I write (or draw) everything I know I call it a "brain dump" this really helps me figure out what I remember and what I need to work on.

We just had our test over the bones and muscles and there were like 25 diagrams and labels it really helped me to draw it out from memory.

I have to write down EVERYTHING! I get our notes on powerpoints and hand outs for most of my classes but I have to REWRITE them and THEN make flashcards, it's time consuming but it's the best.

For microbiology I type out my handwritten notes and that way I can kind of index them and refer to stuff later.

I also record the lectures and while I'm rewriting them I listen to them. Something about rewriting them AND listening to them just makes it click for me. (I didn't record any lectures for the first exam and I got a 70, I did for the second and I got a 92)

My microbiology teacher gave us this website: http://www.vark-learn.com/english/index.asp You take a short survey about your study habits and it gives you tips and hints about what kind of learner you are.

It's only mid way through, go talk to your teacher and see what s\he can offer in regards to tips for you. You can still turn this around. I have faith. :w00t:
