2 weeks shy of end of semester, I failed the clinical portion of my 2nd Fundamentals class ( I chose to break my classes up instead of taking them both concurrently). The thing that makes me angry is, the instructor did not go by the "book", and allow me the opportunity to make up a failed skill, and the nursing director said it was totally "up to the clinical instructor" to allow me to pass.. I faied and I feel so STUPID...Does anyone out there know if this is it? I mean is there No other avenue I can travel to make them Honor their own Nursing Policies and Procedures? It seems outrageous that a clinical instructor can literally CRUSH you if they so choose....

I am so sorry that you have failed the clinical portion of your semester. When it comes to clinical, you are at the mercy of the instructor so you have to be very careful. They fail you for many different reasons, even for stupid ones too.

If the school personnel did not follow their own written policies and procedures, you can file a grievance.

i would do what elkpark said
I've thought about filing a grievance but they have me on one thing that I don't think I can beat...After the instructor failed me for my oral, otic, optic and transdermal medication skill practical, I came in the class room and slammed my book on the table. She wrote me up for being unprofessional...I did speak to the DON and she said that was grounds for immediate failure...so I may just have to suck it up and take the loss...:angryfire Plus, would that make it harder on me for the duration of school? Ive still got 6 clinicals to go to graduate..

unfortunely, with most schools it's up to the clinical instructor on whether or not to pass you in clinicals. i think the whole idea of clinicals is to have the student to work in "real world" situations. but when something goes wrong the clinical instructor have the tendcy to blame the student, because they say that the student should have full control over the situation . now the good thing that could come from this is when you retake this course, 1)you might not have the same instructor, and 2) you know what to do and what not to do

Well, that's a different matter than you originally described. Your best bet may be to apologize sincerely to everyone (the DON, instructor, and anyone else involved) and beg for mercy and a second chance. I hope you'll be able to find a way to make things work out!

I'm sorry. I think I'm probably failing clinical too, because of how the clinical instructor perceives me. I'm trying not to let it get me down. No advice, but I just wanted to say I'm sorry.
Thank you for this...I'm sorry for you too. It's devastating to fail...Period. I'm so glad I came to all nurses to vent, So many nice people to encourage us!! I know its easier said then done, but as the poster above stated, perhaps we're in a not so bad situation after all, maybe there's a reason...Don't give up, it's all over for me, but there still may be a chance for you, Keep Going!!
I immediately apologized to the clinical instructor after it happened, but she still wrote me up. When I met with the DON, I apologized again, yet when I'd explained what the instructor failed me for (I placed the medicine cap face down, instead of face up), she kept saying "it's totally up to your instructor to allow you to pass". Also, I failed a particular skill twice, yet the school's policy allows you to try a third time after paying a fee.The instructor would'nt allow me the oportunity for the third try. Thanks for the well wishes.

I am so sorry to hear about you failing clinical.
The book slamming may have did you in though. I understand because I have a temper and that is TOTAL BS for failing you for laying a med cup down instead of up but the book slamming gave them just cause. Not trying to bring you down, just saying. You can apologize but you can't turn back your actions and it sucks
That is why people don't understand how hard nursing school is. It's not just that the material is hard, it's that you are completely at the mercy of your instructor and they do show favoritism. I think it's so unjust to give the clinical instructor that much power, to fail you solely on their reasons... it's not a good system of checks and balances in the program. Yet, it is what it is.
So sorry for your failed clinical... I feel for ya, I really do.
By the way, you are NOT stupid... you just made a mistake... laying a med cup down... COME ON!!!!! Thats outrageous that she initially tried to fail you for that. Everyone makes mistakes, EVERYONE... and you are a student, you should be expected to make mistakes. I think that unless a mistake causes harm, it should not be grounds for dismisal.
