Excelsior Grads - Do You Think Online Nursing Is In Jeopardy? What State Are You In?

Published

I want so badly to get started with Excelsior. I read so many things on this forum about online problems and State BONs being negative about them. Tell me what is going on with this aspect? I am almost about to change my career goals. Nursing is getting to be a headache; I wish I didn't love it so much. Things don't have to be this complicated. This is why there is a shortage and people are getting fed up. It's happening while they are yet students. I am in the hit and miss arena. When I get one thing done, it changes to something else. HELP ME PLEASE!!!:argue::chuckle

This really troubles me because although I live in NY where EC is, I plan to move. Georgia, Virgina, and California have ALL been options for me at one point and DH and I have now settled on Houston. However, if Texas starts with this, I have NO idea what to do!

hello, as you can tell i'm from phoenix and in the state of AZ, currently they have a new rule, if you have just enrolled, you need to do clinical hours before you take the nclex. The hospitals around here, will gladly take you, to obtain those hours. Some will even have you sign a contract and they will precept you as long as you continue employement at their hospital for a specific time. Then if you so inclined, will pay for all your further nursing education. Not that I'm promoting AZ, because I'm out here as soon as I'm done, because this "dry heat" is crap:scrying::scrying::scrying:, it's 110 AGAIN today. Heading to Oregon or Washington, and they are great with EC grads. I think the heat is getting to me, yikes I'm babbling :chuckle:chuckle:chuckle

Yes, California set a deadline. I can't remember the exact date but it was in 2003. It basically said that all students who were enrolled by this date and kept enrollment active could endorse in or test here. I knew about the date and enrolled before it. There are still people working on their degree that enrolled and kept active before this date....when they finish they can still get licensed. Now, if they don't pay the annual fee and re-enroll they can't get licensed here. Georgia needs to give a deadline date!

Can you possibly move or get with a state that is accepting it near you and do your thing? I live in MD which is one of the states firstly that won't accept EC grads. However, I think VA and WDC does. I had been informed that I can only get licensure for these states and not MD.

In Virginia, you'd have to complete the entire EC program by 12/31/09 in order to be licensed here.

I'm hoping that Georgia will allow us to complete clinical hours in the same way. The local hospital where I live is pretty generous when it comes to nursing students and I think they would gladly accept the EC students as some of the graduates are employed there. Keep your fingers crossed for us.

This is what I'm hoping for; I don't like VA's plan at all because the students that enrolled before their deadline are at different stages in their studies and it's not fair to give all of them a deadline of December 2009. Two students may have enrolled at the same time; however, one may have progressed further along than the other. I'm hoping that if Ga allows us to continue that they would give us until the deadline established by excelsior.

Does any one know about any other states in which Excelsior is cool? Who can you contact in order to find this out?

I'm not sure. I think you should call YOUR states Board to be on the safe side.

This is pretty good list: http://www.istudysmart.com/content.asp?cid=70

But it's best to contact the actual state BONs for the last word. Allegedly. :)

I called the BON and asked them what the deal was with EC? Were the grads running into trouble post NCLEX, lot of them being sued, what? You know what their answer was?

Prepare to steam:

"Well, we had to have clinicals when I was in nursing school..."

Hello, I'm probably doing more now as an LPN in my state than RNs were allowed to do back when you were in nursing school.

"Because we've always done it this way" is NEVER a good enough reason for anything if that's the only reason....
