Excelsior Grads - Do You Think Online Nursing Is In Jeopardy? What State Are You In?

Published

I want so badly to get started with Excelsior. I read so many things on this forum about online problems and State BONs being negative about them. Tell me what is going on with this aspect? I am almost about to change my career goals. Nursing is getting to be a headache; I wish I didn't love it so much. Things don't have to be this complicated. This is why there is a shortage and people are getting fed up. It's happening while they are yet students. I am in the hit and miss arena. When I get one thing done, it changes to something else. HELP ME PLEASE!!!:argue::chuckle

Oh, and chaxanmom, the big difference I forgot to mention -- it's an ASN, not a BSN at completion, and it's not just for LPNs to bridge -- I think students start from scratch. :)

I wish ISU had a paramedic-RN/BSN bridge! That would have been something I would have done, definitely.

Yeah that would be cool! LPNs don't have to take fundamentals of nursing or intro to nursing and can test out of 4 nursing courses though and it doesn't seem to be the same stuff paramedics would have prior knowledge about.

I didn't realize the other was not a bridge program. Starting from scratch I think you definitely need to be near face to face instructors and have a clinical instructor from your school at clinicals. I loooooove the freedom of preceptorship clinicals with ISU though. It's worth feeling somewhat isolated with no in flesh classmates.

I love where I'm doing clinicals now but we're talking about HOPKINS!! lol!

Woo!! Nice!! One of our docs worked part-time in the Hopkins ER -- he was actually featured a bunch on that "Hopkins" show that was on recently. We have been teasing him mercilessly. :D Yeah, I'd say that's worth the drive. :)

I took Speech the first time I went to college, way back in the day ... I'm glad I got so many pre-reqs out of the way back then!

But yeah, the NOVA program isn't for previously licensed healthcare providers, but you do have to have many of the pre-reqs done before starting it -- A&P, Chem, Math, etc. The reason I see nursing schools going to this model is that it requires fewer instructors for the theory portion of the education, which will probably allow more students to enroll, maybe making it easier for students to get into nursing programs.

We don't have TV but I watched that show online. It was awesome!! Which doc was he????

I got a lot of pre-reqs out of the way while picking away at my degree for 10+ years but never did speech. :banghead: lol

Chaxanmom, I sent you a PM. :)

Got it. Thanks! Now I know something the others don't know. I have a secret...........:coollook: LOL! J/K. :D

Ivan, you are right, those of us who can, should think about becoming a nursing school instructor or clinical instructor. I have taught at the college level in a different field (legal studies) and know for sure that the abuse heaped on students by so many nursing instructors is not tolerated elsewhere. I do not think it is limited to Massachusetts, but may be more evident here due to the numbers of hospitals, universities, etc.

Also, those of us who have benefited from distance learning should keep in mind that political activism on behalf of nurses coming up behind us should also be a priority. Some of the states that are making it difficult for EC students would benefit from some political activism aimed at the BON's.

Heh. And I got into the LPN-RN year and chose not to go because I freakin' hated nursing school with a passion approaching frothing at the mouth.

Nursing instructors are nuts and evil. Usually.

How refreshing to hear the truth from someone!!!! I'm an L.P.N., just started the R.N. program and hating every solitary minutes of it. There has to be another way!!!

"does any one know about any other states in which excelsior is cool? who can you contact in order to find this out? "

not a big fan of the area of the state where i live, but here in fl the bon accepts ec grads as long as you were an lpn prior to completing the program (sorry rts and medics). they consider being an lpn as enough clinical experience and from what i've heard fl bon is one of the stricter states when it comes down to licensure.
