Did I make a big mistake?

Nursing Students Excelsior

Published

I just interviewed for an LPN position with St. Mary's Health Systems in Grand Rapids. During the interview, while discussing educational goals, the hiring manager informed me that St. Mary's doesn't typically hire RNs with an Excelsior degree. Have any Excelsior grads encountered problems with getting hired? I'm currently located in Michigan but possibly relocating to North Carolina in the future. Is there a way to get clinical hours to supplement an Excelsior degree? I knew this would be a potential problem but hearing it first hand from a major hospital has me worried. I just enrolled at Excelsior, and trust me when I say I did a ton of research. .. but did I make a huge mistake?

Hello. I live in the GR area and I know that spectrum will also not hire nurses from excelsior. But I have worked with excelsior grads where I am at in a nursing home. I don't know how metro feels about excelsior grads

I have worked with EC grads who stated they had no problem whatsoever. Most employers care that you have a valid, active license. That is enough. One grad I knew even rejoiced in the fact that her hiring interviewer (for her first RN job) specifically welcomed her because she was an EC grad.

No problems for me.

I have had a few friends that were Excelsior grads that had a hard time, but that was due to being a new grad with an ASN, not for graduating from Excelsior.

I've never had anyone ask me what school I attended in regards to getting a job.

Thanks, that's very helpful. At this point, an online program is really the only one I can really fit into my life so I suppose I'll just continue as planned and deal with any issues when I come to them :)

Stories like this makes me reconsider this program all the time. Anyone from Pittsburgh pa that is actually working in a hospital after graduation from EC?

Anyone from Columbus, OH area that has found a job working in a hospital? I am currently working in home health and would like to work in a hospital setting eventually. Thanks!

Any one know about Excelsior's new rule - you now from September 2014 only have 3 times to pass an exam and not 4 times as previous.

Also if you fail the same exam twice you go on academic probation.
