California Excelsior graduate after 2003, pls help!

Nursing Students Excelsior

Published

Hello,

I am a current Excelsior College student (all exams and FCCA completed) preparing for CPNE. My problem is that due to my husband's job, our family has relocated to California which no longer accepts EC graduates due to lack of clinical hours provided by EC. I do hold a current CA LVN license.

Are there any EC graduates after 2003 that live in CA that was able to become an RN in CA? If so, what did you do to get around this situation?

I am so close to finishing my RN education and this is a great opportunity for my husband, but I don't want to remain an LVN/LPN, so does anyone have any ideas to get around this (other than leaving my husband, because I still like having him around :))

Thanks

If you were to get a job with in the Veterans Affairs healthcare system they don't care where you got your RN through. So if you are licensed in one state as an RN and then worked at the Veterans Affairs with an out of state RN license you should be able to work in Cali that way.

(Just to be clear, it's not just the VA system -- for any federal nursing position, including in military facilities and any other kind of federal facility or position, it doesn't matter where the actual facilty is located, as long as you are licensed in some US state, you can work there. The federal facilities aren't licensed by the states, and therefore aren't bound by the nursing licensure rules of the state(s) in which they are located.)

Thank you for clarifying that. I appreciate the input.

Charlene I realize that facilities may hire excelsior grads in Florida once they are Florida licensed. However, I dont think the state of Florida will allow an excelsior grad to sit for their state boards.

Yes, they will. The latest state information is here: https://www.excelsior.edu/state-board-requirements

That is wonderful! Thanks LunahRN

Has anyone graduated from excelsior college and been able to work in california ? Not in a government job?

I'd be very interested in any info on this very subject as I am a paramedic who would like to do Excelsior but is afraid of not being able to endorse into CA even if I get my license first in another state. CA's BON sucks. I need/want to further my education and this is my best option.....12 years on an ambulance has gotten old!

You will not be able to be licensed in CA if your entry to practice is an ASN from a Excelsior even if you go on to an RN-BSN program. CABRN has been strictly enforcing concurrent theory and practical/clinical education for a number of years. According to CA law challenge exams with a clinical exam at the end does not meet the educational standards for licensing in CA. There are no exceptions. Excelsior ASN grads are not eligible for licensing in CA as an RN.

I moved to California as an ASN Excelsior grad with 4 years experience in 2012. It can be done and it is not that difficult. I have my California nursing license within 4 months of moving to California. I am living and working in San Diego at an ER now. In fact, all of my education is online including starting law school in 2 months.

When did you first enroll in EC's program? Some graduates are grandfathered in if they enrolled before a certain date.

Does anyone know if you can go on and get a bachelor's in nursing via rn-bsn after being a grad from excelsior with and associate's degree? So, in other words, getting the clinical/supervision hours as an rn working toward a bsn? I am a native california and hoping to go back home in the next few years and not sure continuing with excelsior is a good idea. I need any information if you can help!

No. They always look at your initial qualification not subsequent coursework.
